Having some trouble with our in-camera audio... our master audio is fine, the sound going into camera seems to be fine, but when we go to watch our dailies or (God forbid) put it into the Final Cut, the sound is almost inaudibly quiet. Its there, we can here it if we crank everything and see a tiny little waveform, but its almost nothing.

Anybody got any thoughts? we're still on build 13, (DP reluctant to use a beta release in the middle of shooting a feature), but hoping somebody has an idea of how to fix this. Thanks!

Double check your QuickTime settings for audio...

build 13 has never given me errors during a recording. i dont use build 14 because it has stopped recording too many times during the middle of a take, or crashed the camera, and once it erased a take after i recorded it and was playing it back.

Hi PARR,

What do your camera VU meters look like while shooting? Are they hitting yellow at least once in a while or are they only green. I have found that our camera VU meters are pretty similar to FCP.

I have found since the arrival of digital video many sound people are afraid to let the audio to get hot enough. This accounts for "whimpy waveform" syndrome. I have seen this in many cameras not just ours. You don't want to clip but most are too afraid to let the audio go past the midpoint on the scale.

Mouse Sneezing could be bit code reversed

Mouse Sneezing could be bit code reversed

Hi

You could get that effect if the software has mis-converted the code. Sometimes when this happens the MSB (most significant bit) is read as the LSB (least significant bit). The result of this is that the higher volumes (eg your actors speaking) sound incredibly quiet and the part of the audio that should be silence sounds like a huge burst of static.

This used to happen quite a bit over 10 years ago when a computer would miss read a .aif as a .wav

Also I had the problem recently when an editor sent me a file from his AVID and it came out on my machine with this problem. I think it was either caused by him hitting a wrong button when exporting or my version of quicktime. Anyway - he re-exported and I updated quicktime and the problem dissappeared with the new files.
