Build 9 is expected to have playback in camera but for now, what are those shooting RED doing for playback?

I'm shooting a narrative short in early November with martial arts and a ton of action; any ideas on how we can handle playback? I know the stunt team and myself as well is going to have to re-watch some shots to see if the stunt/hit lands the way it is supposed to. I've got some possible ideas but none that exclude the rental of an expensive HD-SDI capable deck...

we just shot, removed the CF and watched the material directly in RED ALERT... not live playback, but went pretty quickly...

sandisk CF Reader 800fw
MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz + 1gb)
12v/220w car adapter for plugging in the external harddisk :-)

yes but...

yes but...

Can you play the clips instantaneously off the CF? (somewhat similar to the whole P2 viewer app on PCs) or do you have to copy the contents first to an external drive?

You can preview the QT wrappers that are created in camera right off the CF card, but in order to get full frame rates you are limited to the proxy resolution. But then you are previewing a fairly small image.

Playback in camera is now enabled in the beta build. It works great!.

Is the beta build available to camera holders?

Geoff,

Here's a great thread re: on-set playback and video assist from about 7 months back... it has a lot of workflow methods discussed including various third party options for D/A converters, frameline requirements, and production expectations.

Open discussions about development like this have helped make RED what it is today... hope this helps:

there are several ways to playback depending on how much money you want to spend.

first off, the lcd is too small for pro focus.

so you need a bigger monitor on set. or two or three.

so for the shows that i have done, we come out hd-sdi from the preview, into a on board hd monitor that has a loop through. then to another hd monitor from the loop through, crt hd monitor is better than lcd or plasma, you can put to an hd-cam deck into that loop and record each take..but expensive to rent and tapes are not cheap.

if you want to go with a wireless solution then you can still go to an on board hd monitor from hdsdi, then from the loop through go to an onboard aja down converter and then to a wireless transmitter/receiver for video village and a vtr person whom can record the sd signal into the usual suspects, but it will be at ntsc resolution.

hope that helps.

keep the lcd plugged in because you will need it for focus assist, exposure assist and other sexy features coming in future builds. the lcd and hdsdi ports are switchable (toggle) with one button on the lcd.

Thanks for the input. Do you know if focus assist, exposure assist are accessible via HD-SDI? I'm planning on using an 8.5" Panasonic onboard monitor via HD-SDI vs the RED LCD. Are those features only viewable via the RED LCD?

as i said above, you must have both monitors hooked up and toggle between the two as focus assist and exposure assist are not accessible through the hd-sdi port. at least with the monitors i have used. someone else chime in if your experience is different.

The total menu window is 1280 x 848 and HD-SDI preview can only support 1280 x 720. That's the mode you are in when in Preview so you lose the bottom menu segment which displays the waveform, histogram, and focus assist tools when using a 1280x720 monitor such as the Panasonic range.

We have hooked up an AJA HD10M3. This gives you 2x HD-SDI loop outs and either a SDI, composite or component downconvert. You can power off the camera with a cable which has the lemo connector for the AUX out. If you take off the sides bars from the HDD cradle you can mount it inside there out of the way.

For PAL users because the Preview output is 720 60p the downconverted signal is NTSC.
