  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just need links, as I guess this has been answered before.

I am aware of metacheater...

A client (who planned to edit in FCP) will cut in MC (I guess) and I am to give him offline SD files.

I will be doing the conform to 1080 DPXs either with FCP/Crimson/RL/RC or with Scratch. So after offline in AVID I need to get the projects into either of these tools.

1. Should I give him DV, DNx or ???

2. MetaCheater comes into play to give the files AVID-acceptable names, right?

In that case, I guess I make the proxies with Crimson/RedLine (or RedRushes), and use the metacheater on them afterwards?

3. Client cuts :)

4. And now what?

I need to have/use an EDL or get the project back to FCP I guess to get an XML for Crimson. Or??

I guess ALE comes in to play somewhere (or should I just drink it?)

I have been bugged for NOT understanding that the AVID way is as easy as the FCP way. Enlighten me! :)

Cheers!

(Would really look into an AVID solution if it is as or more solid than the FCP solution - which has its quirks, too...)

Most basic DI conform from DPX files is an EDL using timecode and tape name. Both of these pieces of metadata are in the header file of the DPX file. REDrushes, REDline, RedCine all export DPX with this information.

The Avid resolution is dependent on what they choose to work in. DNxHD 36 all the way up to uncompressed 10 bit. If offline, DNxHD 36 is a perfect resolution for that.

REDrushes creates an ALE directly with more metadata than MetaCheater and you will get both timecodes in the file. Then the process is the same as with metacheater, import ALE, merge QuickTime references into it during import and stat editing.

The step that is still in process right now is using RedCine to export the DPX files from a pull list of just the shots used. Avid is close to releasing the XML and XSLT files to do this, but it also requires that the original offline dailies were created with RedCine for the proper metadata to send back. We haven't gotten the REDrushes or MetaCheater to RedCine pull list to work and is most likely due to the "user" metadata that RedCine generates that is not available when starting out with the others. REDrushes does not take a pull list back in to create a DPX set of files.

Although the goal is to start with anything and end up anywhere, the initial steps in this world of ever changing development is to choose the post path carefully to start knowing where you want to end up.

So if I want to offline in SD and conform to DPX's for CC, comps and keys, there are really no good solution (given that my client doesn't have a nitris to stay online all the way...)

Could I do it with Automatic Duck?
Because I guess I can still not get an edl from MC to play in FCP?

I could lend him a FCP station... :)

The SCRATCH way:
Export files from SCRATCH with accompanying ALE, separate folder, original file names, all that stuff. Import in Avid with the ALE. Edit. Export EDL from AVID. Conform in SCRATCH.

I've have done it this way mentioned above. Edit Avid and Auto Duck back to FCP. Though that requires you to have Auto Duck out of Avid and Auto Duck into FCP, two separate products but it does work.

depending what you want... but you can export a an xml/tabbed list from AVID
FilmScribe and then create a list which you can then add the REDline commands to each of these clips. This can be turned into a script which spits out DPX files with header. I just conformed a 1.5 hour film with this method and it worked with a few problems like multiple clips names and Timecode missmatching.

This can be remedied by making sure the original import is good with as much metadata as possbile.

The client has decided to settle for online on DNxHD files

Is there a reason for using one tool over another when transcoding the log files?
