  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yes, that works wonderfully... until you have some kind of crazy deadline at 2 AM and jump onto another computer because you're rendering on the other 3 you usually use, then forget to set the prefs for the new computer you're using.

Or worse, if you change the prefs on that computer, then forget to change them back, causing the person who usually uses it (and who is used it to being set the OTHER way) to throw things at you when things go unexpectedly weird on them.

Ah... if anyone would invent a simple transportable settings system, that would be great. A USB stick / software combo that you plug into a computer (or downloadable .mac-esque thing) and all of the computer's programs get set up with your keyboard prefs, etc with minimal user intervention. If it had a quick "make things the way they were before I used it" button that'd be best too ;). Freelancers would rejoice. Maybe it exists already? If so, please let me know! My coworkers would thank you too because then maybe I'd stop messing up their systems...

If you're a Mac guy, it's quite feasible to build a DVD with OS X on it and a custom setup, then boot from it. It is a little slower than usual, though.

If you forget to do that... go to Interpret Footage and Composition Settings and change the default 30fps to 23.976.

Hey Bruce. If those computers have Leopard installed on them, you can log in to a guest account which should have access to the apps folder. Then you can plug in a thumb drive with your pref files and just run a saved Automator action that copies the files to the appropriate folders. When you log out of the Guest account in Leopard it is erased so your colleagues computer will be back to the way it was exactly.

It's not as transparent as a .mac preference, that's for sure... but it should be pretty simple.
 
Wow, thanks for the tips... both sound good!

Now all we need to do is settle on it as a standard industry practice to avoid being outcast as "that freelancer who came in and did something weird" ;)

If I make a good Automator script, I promise to share, otherwise the boot method sounds fun too. When not on deadline, I'll try...

I guess the simplest Windows equivalent would be making a quick batch file that makes a duplicate of the prefs then copies yours over... then you run another batch file when you leave that puts things back.
