So I'm looking at pre ordering the Raven I/O package. Without having any prior Red gear, what else am I going to need to purchase to actually be ready to shoot for a few hours?

Second, I'm so new to the Red game... will I be able to edit 4.5k on a mac pro with 16 gigs of ram without needing a Red Rocket?

Sorry for the horrible questions.

Well on the computer front that's easy ... Mac Pro will be perfect, don't worry about the rocket, make sure you have a fast raid drive though. The camera question is tricky since it's not out yet, I'd lean to the base I/O package (theoretically you'd need a battery/charger and mini mag reader) ... but since no one has that yet I don't think your going to get a solid answer till February.

.... edit ... looking back at your post ... looks like you've been a lurker for a long time ;)

Hey Jeff,

I've worked with RED for some time now and will finally be able to afford my own one with the Raven coming out.
Ever since the announcement I started to build a (spec) set to create a shooting package
- Accessories
- Batteries
- Lenses
- etc

If you are interested sen dme a PM and we can discuss what you need to have and what will be helpful
If anyone else is interested in this let me know and I'll be able to post a whole list (and keep it updated)

to shoot and dump and with the base I/O package. All you will really need are a couple things.

#1 Batteries, I would Suggest at least 3-4 V-mount batteries and means to charge them

#2 Mini Mag reader. Red has them for sale, but I'm going with this solution http://support.g-technology.com/support/ev-series-reader-red-mini-mag Paired with http://support.g-technology.com/support/g-dock-ev-thunderbolt
This set up will be great for unloading and managing raven footage, and utilize the thunderbolt speed for the mini mag.

#3 a Lens seems like common sense but it does not come with a lens, I do know Jarred has been talking about his new bulletproof lens https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1sffh9srsw looks pretty cool, and should work very well with the Raven

#4 some form of support. the package comes with a universal handle, I'm looking at riser plates and cage accessories now, and considering monitoring options, I plan on using wireless monitors, however i really want the new EVF (its super expensive tho).. im going off now... the point is you can take is as far as you want to go, but #1, and #2 seem like the most important to get going unless you dont own any lenses

You can get the body and save for the rest or just save up and get it later with everything you need. Most of us got the camera then saved for the monitor, media stations, cards etc.

I think you might want to consider bumping the 16G of RAM in the Mac Pro.

I've been working with a new MacPro with 16 Gigs of ram, and a non raid 8TB drive for a year, working fine. Will be getting a Pegasus2 RAID soon though. I've never maxed out my 16 gigs with Premiere and Audition open at the same time (my normal combo). usually use about 9 gigs

Yeah ah but that extra 16gbs of RAM means you can have 20 google chrome tabs up at the same time too ;) hahaha

Also, there was a great thread while back about rigging a new DSMC 1 body that is still worth reading for newcomers. Lots of overlap with RAVEN. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?79976-Scarlet-Buying-Guide
