I feel the need to do some community service here cause the announcement on this is hidden within another post, and I think this is going to be a big deal for a lot of users who are into the RED camera.

Everyone knows the Birger mount is a cool product, it has allowed a lot of people who could not afford to buy / rent PL mount lenses on a consistant basis to get into the system for a more affordable cost while offering some major features.

Yet, talking to a lot of users, many have been nervous about using the Birger mount cause some customers do want a PL mount from time to time and the idea of swapping RED'S PL mount with Birger's over and over troubles them.

Problem solved:

Birger has recently announced that they are working on a PL mount which will go on the Birger mount. This means going from Canon (Or Nikon in the near future) to PL will be a pretty painless operation.

For me this is major as I now can offer clients either Canon EOS, or PL mount without a lot of grief on my end. It also allows me to move into the RED Pro Primes when I am ready without feeling like I lost my investment in the Canon lenses.

This is a cool thing, and I wanted to bring it to the attention of people...

So there!

Jay

Another good announcement...

Forgive me for being so awfully out of the loop - but is the Birger mount now officially recognized by Red? I seem to remember it violating the warranty, though this was some time back.

Lets count:

- Canon EOS/EF Flange focal distance is 44 mm.

- Arri PL "Positive Lock" (16/35) c. 1980-present (four-pronged flange) is 52.00 mm Diameter 54.00 mm.

That means Birger would build a special adapter between Canon EOS and Arri PL to "get this difference that is 8 mm".

This can be "screwed"/"swapped" on existing Birger EOS/EF mount.

Sounds great and is sort of conceptual extension from IMS that has a base mount and than you add many different adapters to "get" other possible flange focal distances.

One more thing or tip is that I just finally found (an online info) that

Arri PL "Positive Lock" (16/35) SR high speed models is 51.97 mm that means for Master Primes is (0.3 mm) shorter than standard PL flange focal distance of 52 mm.

We have approved the original mount.. the one that hides the I-pin cable inside the mount and goes onto the camera.

We have not approved any mount that uses the i-pin cable or connects to the camera electronically through the mount via the i-pins, nor of course this new PL mount that sounds like a great idea.

But since it seems to use the same interface as well as the same "base" mount as the Canon EOS, it should be a straightforward process, right?

I just got off the phone with Jarred... and I am sure this is going to get straightened out next week...

I would say that is no need of any "special" approval for the upcoming Birger PL "adapter" to Canon EOS mount just because Canon EOS already has many adapters available:

Nikon F, Leica R, Contax/Yashica CO/Y, Hasselblad, M42, Minolta SR, Olympus OM, Pentax K, Rollei QBM, Pentacon Six, T2, Canon FD - EOS, ...

Collimation?

Collimation?

An how would you collimate this new mount if you don't have the feed from the lens anymore?
Trial and error?

no need to panic all... these mounts are out in the wild and we have had ZERO ( as far as I know ) reports of them doing any damage since Erik started using the I-pin port, so it looks like Erik did a good job in the implementation.

We just need to see these kinda things, specially ones that use internal electrical connections to the camera that were never meant to be used this way.

Do you need to re-collimate when you switch between Canon and PL?

It sounds like a great idea and I'll be first in line to get one.
Changing mounts on the set is just not possible most of the time.

On the other hand, What bugs me is those exiting announcements followed by silence.

That's cause everyone has such a fantastic installation video to follow.

:)

I'm shameless.....

Do you need to re-collimate when you switch between Canon and PL?

Collimate once for the canon and write down the setting on the collimation ring; collimate once for the PL, and write down the dial setting on the collimation ring; etc... We also might consider measuring and marking the delta from nominal thickness on any given mount, so you only need to collimate once, and dial in the delta of the deltas.

Can't hold hundredths (mm) inexpensively, especially once you factor in the finish... but flat and parallel and measurement can be done cheap to orders of magnitude better than this.... We will officially announce the product when we have some of our new manufacturing processes up in house.

Same with Nikon?

This is great news...but i was really hoping for a solution for nikon lenses first. it's like nikon is the red headed stepchild (like me) of electronic mounts...

I would love a nikon mount to work with my imperio.
Great for those low budget run and gun shows... even docu work.
