  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Need i/o expander?

Jetpack doesnt have SDI though just hdmi and if you want to connect an external mic you need the more expensive Base I/O. I am anxiously awaiting the OMOD's

Pretty sure Jarred is adding SDI. He asked Reduser if it's something they would like and pretty much everybody said yes. I'll look for the thread and post the link.

AH ok I did see that before, still doesn't help with the external mic input though.

Yea true. I'm planning on going for the Base I/O V-lock expander, but I am excited to see OMOD offerings, if there isn't a budget friendlier expander than Base I/O then I will have to pass. Super anxious as well.

A bit of an odd thing I read while pricing out a custom package vs. RED's packages with the Raven/S-W:

"NOTE: The DSMC2 Top Handle is NOT fully compatible with the DSMC2 Base I/O V-Lock Expander, as the top handle will interfere with the battery when one is attached to the expander module.

Found here-

So with that said, whats the point of them being bundled together if they won't function properly when a V-mount is attached? Can someone please clarify? Much thanks!

Good find, I know people worry about the handles and the touch monitor not being able to fold down when packing up the camera. Because of the placement of the handles in relation to the monitor and mounting points. But the top handle doesn't come with the base i/o v lock expander package, the "universal handle" does. The top handle has a record button on it, and comes with Jetpack expander package. The universal handle that comes with Scarlet/Raven base I/o packages is a dumb handle, no electronics. But I'm interested to know as well why the top handle wouldn't work.

Looks like it is this handle that is not compatible.

I believe the Raven / Scarlet W packages come with the cheaper universal handle which doesn't have start / stop functionality. Seems strange though. I assume the outrigger handle with start / stop is compatible. That is what comes with the jetpack kit.

I liked how the Top Handle looked in the Marques Brownle Raven video, doubt I would have went for it with out having the new dsmc2 side handle being unveiled but still :(

Thanks for the clarification gents!

Without SDI out or audio in the Raven is a $7,900 camera. I didn't realize it didn't have SDI or audio inputs. The specs for this camera are impossibly hard to find. I spent a long time on the Raven page before I found some specs hidden off to the side. Even Jared's post doesn't tell me everything I need to know. For example what is the base ISO? Rolling or Global shutter? Are ProRes formats full sensor or windowed? etc etc. I know the answers to some of these questions now. But now that I know its going to cost me basically $2k after taxes to add a SDI output and two audio ports...? Forget it. I love the .r3d workflow but this camera is a $10k+ camera and the lack of clarity on the specs makes it hard not to know any better.

They're not. The V-Lock expander is bundled with the DSMC2 Universal Handle which is shorter and has more mounting points/options. The DSMC2 Top Handle has the start/stop button and rubber grip, is quite a bit longer and can only be mounted in one specific point on a DSMC2 brain.
