Hi RED users!

I am working on a music video and the concept we have is to do a smooth one-take 360 degree pan of people around a campfire. I am looking into what our options are to achieve this and looking at various motion control rigs, since I am not familiar with working with them before. Any advice someone can give on a good motion control rig? We don't have a lot of money so might have to look into renting something but wanted to see what the general consensus was on motion control rigs and if it's the best way for us to go to get the shot right! Thanks!

If its just a simple pan you may have success with something cheap and simple like a Kessler revolution head and oracle controller. Not true motion control, but possibly sufficiently repeatable for the task. What would concern me about what you're proposing is the flickering and changeable light - the post work involved with this kind of vfx is complicated greatly if the passes don't have consistent lighting.

HI

HI

Moco is always tough I have Hotgears that replay 62 seconds, I fire my rig with a custom box and I have live blayback with a video switcher to mix the footage/audio its great for twins live. Cheers Cliff. Look up Hotgears ther in LA Mayron is the guy.

I would look at renting either just a camblock head:
www.camblock.com

or if your in Los Angeles hit up Joe Lewis at General-Lift and he can get you a basic head and a kuper computer for not a whole lot of money. Tell him Charlie from Virginia Tech sent you.

If you need help operating the kuper hit me up: charlie@bigchaz.com

I just order from Kessler something similar... "Motorized Turntable v1.0" $549.95. I have a couple of the oracle heads all ready ... which are around 900 (I like gearing out with one manufacturer as things are more interchangable). Also I have a Kessler pan/tilt system ... but that's kind of overkill.

They have some test video, but I don't think it's exactly applicable to your case.

btw ... the lens matters a lot as it rotates ... i.e. 32mm seems way smoother then a 100mm, especially if the background is in focus.
