I think it has become a trope, but I really want the most I can get out of my camera. (I do plan on upgrading to the Scarlet Dragon, but in the mean time I have a couple of shots to complete.) I know us Scarlet users are never satisfied.

How about 4.5K HD-WS at 24p? (So roughly 4320 x 1802)

I don't actually want it for the resolution, but for wider shots.

And while I am at it...

3.5K WS or 3.5K HD-WS at 50 fps would be nice too.

Not nearly as valuable as the wider shot to me, but it would be handy.

You are going to have a similar complaint when you upgrade to scarlet dragon...Maybe you should consider going to epic if you want a wider frame. The scarlet dragon at 5k is the same or almost the exact same as the crop as the scarlet at 4k.

They have to leave some incentive for you to upgrade to epic...not to mention not spit in the faces of the people who did buy an epic. Not everyone shoots slo-motion all the time, it should have a significant advantage to go over the scarlet.

That being said, as a scarlet owner, I would LOVE any increase in performance, but its just not realistic to keep requesting over and over and expect them to change. (not just you, others in the past)

Using the crop tool http://www.red.com/tools/crop-factor 5K on the Dragon is slightly wider than 4.5K on the Mystrium-X, and I rarely need something as wide. I can deal with it. (But every once in awhile I do!)

I do not see how an extra 224 pixels wider would spit in the face of Epic owners. It just maximizes the Scarlet's horse power (or lack of). I don't think anyone has asked for a HD Widescreen mode yet.

I am not upgrading to the Epic because the Scarlet Dragon will fit my needs given the current known specs and price. It pretty much is a 5K Alexa. The increased low light performance and the higher dynamic range all fix the Scarlet's so-called "flaws." I don't do a lot of slow mo work, but 75 fps at 4K will more than fulfill my needs. Granted I would love an Epic Dragon, but I don't have $19,000 dollars laying around, heck I barely have enough to upgrade once.. (The dynamic range is very important to me shooting, I tend to do a lot of inside aircraft shots. HDRx sold me on the Scarlet originally.)

I know RED most likely will not do it, it is more like a wish. A "It would be cool to have" type thing. And maybe 4.5K HD-WS (4.3K) is far enough away from 5K to consider it, and maybe the Scarlet has enough processing power to handle it.

I stand corrected! I forgot about the crop tool listing smaller sensor crops. But I agree with you, I don't need more then the scarlet dragon. Extra features would be nice scarlet-X, its just been argued for a long time, thats all.:beatdeadhorse5:

What I've gotten from some clients is that because the Epic can sample the whole sensor; compared to the Scarlet's windowing of the MX sensor, you get more stops, higher native ISO...not just resolution. I just look at the specs, but the windowing seems like it could have an effect

according to red its the same sensor, same specs, minus the processing power. unless extensive testing would prove otherwise I'd go with Reds theory on the matter. also can you crop the 4k image to 3.5 with any dimensions you want in post, and shoot in camera using frame guides to frame for said dimensions?

4.5k has been asked for before, as well as 2k at 120. I didn't think it was going to happen personally so I got an Epic, and its pretty sweet! but people are brats, and I am in the process of buying a phantom. i think i have a speed problem...

I have a feeling 4.5K will be added to the Scarlet at NAB. Too much of its thunder is being overshadowed by the BMPC and other upcoming 4K cams. That will make the premium paid for MX a little more worthwhile.

I actually sold my Scarlet last month and switched to all 3 Blackmagic cams, but would love to see that option, because with stiff competition we all win.

Part of me hopes to hedge on a price drop, but, alternatively, I know they could simply upgrade the firmware, especially seeing as the RED ONE had a fair amount of time on the used market since it was discontinued.

I've been holding off on purchasing a Scarlet, waiting to see what NAB offers, and the toss up leaves me deciding whether I should wait, or jump on one of the few used packages I've had my eyes on.

i got the phantom and now i want a faster higher res one lol

conclusion: we are always chasing better specs
