So, finally got my Scarlet-X today. First thing of course I ran into the issue of having the menus display on an external monitor (have no touch Red Monitor yet). A bit of googling brought me the solution of the preset files to move the menus. Great! Except not. This solution requires the the preset files to be put on an SSD Mag (which I have), but it has to be formatted - which can only be done using the menu. Quite a silly problem to be having. Nevertheless...

Is there a way to format on a computer? Or a hotkey on camera?

Jonas, just head to a rental house and ask to use their touch screen, redmote or side handle for a few seconds. After you give them a nice chocolate or something, go to display settings, scroll right to "priority," and set "HD-SDI Brain" to the top of the list.

Done.

Karl, I'm not sure the touch is a must have.... using a Redmote, side handle or EVF, you can control the camera just as with the touch screen. Using the side handle wheel is undeniably faster.

Have you tried putting the force_preset files on the SSD anyway?

Basically, does your PC/Mac reader see the SSD when connected?

Like Andy said, try putting the menus preset file into a folder named "force_preset" (the exact naming of the folder gave me some trouble when I first got my Scarlet as well)

That folder has to be in the top level of the SSD. It may not require a full format.

Just borrow a REDMote set settings to menu on HDMI and HDSDI and put them im priority (whichever you'll be using) and put the touch screen under them as priority. You'll be fine. On the REDmote itself you can even do this. Change a slot to "HDMI" or "HDSDI" and in that you can scroll to see settings such as " Menu, Clean, Preview, ect..."

If menu set to HDSI once you do not need touch. I use sidehandle most. I love touch. But straight out of the box settings are wrong...rent.set.use any monitor.

I just got my scarlet this week and had to do the same thing. I was able to do it without a side handle or redmote. I just had my card, camera and dp4. Let me know if you need clearer instructions and I can walk you through it.

I'm certain you can just format the card on your computer through either redcinex pro or one something like that I think, or even just a base format like you would a HD then place the force-preset folder itself on the drive and boot the camera up with it in.

To be honest I had this same issue and I was offered going to the rental house but decided to try a format on my own and it worked (formatting through right clicking the drive and selecting format on my PC). Unfortunately as that was a while ago I have forgotten the specifics but I'm sure if you are still having issues after trying a base format (or if you are hesitant to try it on such expensive media) I'd get in contact with your rep or a local shooter who can help you out.

I'm certain it's even in the instructions I can't remember which fat32 or NTFS, I'd ask you BS rep or support. It wasn't really that difficult an issue, but for a moment I was upset thinking I needed a touchscreen to run the camera at all. Which is simply not true as mine has yet to have one attached since I have owned it... not something I should really brag about though, not that I was.

oh and as a side note the force preset for the most recent update has yet to be released last time I checked as it's at version 3.3 and the last preset was for version 3.2, so make sure you are loading the last stable release for 3.2. Though the 3.2 force presets may work with v3.3 as I have yet to try them... so don't take my word on this.

Wow, such response :)

I'm only getting back to you now because of the time difference (Europe).

First of all, I forgot to say in my original post that I do have a Side Handle (no Redmote).

When you insert a brand new SSD in a windows computer it is unformatted. I tried formatting it, and then doing the preset procedure, but to no avail. I don't have the option of selecting FAT32 though (because the disk is too big apparently), so that might be the problem. I will check if RedcineX has an option for formatting the SSD, but the manual clearly says it can only be done on the camera as the formatting is tied to the firmware version.

It would be nice though, if a new camera had one of the preset buttons assigned to "monitor switch" or such, so we could avoid these issues. It seems that a lot of people have similar trouble.

Ok, my immediate sollution will be to borrow a Red Pro 7" for a couple of minutes later today and move the menus.
