Just got a Quantum 600a and now need some LTO-3 tape. Anyone recommend brands or a vendor? I am a fan of Tapeonline.com as for a vendor, but am always open to suggestions. Thanks!

Peter

I might be wrong on this but I thought the 600A was network attached SDLT tape drive capable of 300gb native with a transfer rate of 36 mb/s while the LTO 3A is network attached with 400gb native and a 68 mb/s transfer rate.

Of course LTO 4 technology is right around the corner with double the storage and transfer rates, so I would have held off to see if there was going to be an LTO 4a so that you could hook it up to a laptop via ethernet connection. The LTO4 will be ultra320.

Hi Luis,

The drive I got is lto 3. To Steve's point, I spoke with Quantum and they told me the Lto 4 version of the 600a is at least a year off. Not sure how accurate that is, but its the best info I was able to find.

LTO3 Brands

LTO3 Brands

I have personal experience with Tandberg, TDK and Quantum brands.
Does not seem to be much in it but for the price- the tandberg being the cheapest in the UK...
I ahve only been using them for about 6 months- quite heavily though - with no issues...
I think choose a known brand, and you will be OK
thanks

Hi Nils,

I got the Quantum drive for $6417 shipped from Custom Supply Inc (www.mediasupplystore.com). Hope that helps!

Thank you Peter, it helps.
I've been looking for an LTO3 drive that would work through ethernet, and it's the only one I found.
It's just a shame that it costs like 4 times more than an SCSI drive... I really don't need the MXF capabilities neither...

Thanks Graham. Just placed an order for Quantum tapes -- figured I stick with the same brand as the drive.

Luis: You definitely pay a big premium for the ethernet functionality (and mxf, though like you, I didn't need that). It's nice being able to access the drive over a network, though, and connect it to your laptop. Let us know what you decide to do.
