Hello, all. I'm an indie filmmaker on a tuppence budget , and I'm just wondering what the lowest possible price for a fully functioning Scarlet-x is. I'm aware the red.com package is $14, 015 for a fully working Scarlet with accessories, but are there any cheaper possibilities?

For example:

1. Are RedMags the only ssd's that can work in Red's SSD module?

2. Are there any third party alternatives to the ssd module for recording 4K?

3. Is the touch LCD necessary to access all of the Scarlet's features, including the Canon mount's capabilities?

4. On the other hand, is the side handle necessary to access all of the Scarlet's features, especially record start/stop and power on/off?

5. Are there any third party alternatives to the RedMag Station or the Redvolt travel charger?

6. OR, can the Scarlet be powered by any third party battery solutions or cheap knock-off versions of the Redvolts?

7. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it appears the Scarlet's price will increase by at least $1,450 in the new year, due to the omission of the ssd module, bringing the current $9,750 to $11, 200. If this is indeed the case, will the package Scarlet price ($14,015) remain unchanged?

Very much thanks in advance for any and all advice, and please do not take offence by these questions.

1. Yes

2. No - (EDIT: while there may end up being ways to record to something else, I don't think you can do it in 4K)

3. No - but you'll need at least the one of these to control the camera: touchscreen, the side handle or the REDmote

4. See #3, but right now the only battery power option is the side handle (or see #6)

5. No and no

6. No "cheap ones" - can configure RED Bricks, or probably Anton-Bauer or IDX - not sure if you'll save any money

7. Aftter 1/1/12, you'll not only lose the included SSD module ($1500) but also the lens mount - total of at least $2000

quick answer~

1.Yes

2.Yes, but I think REDCODE RAW is one of the main reasons that people buy scarlet, you can also check on these threads:

3. This is the part that you can save up, Side handle REDmote and the monitor all can control the camera individually

4. I think the power on/off is on scarlet's body

5. Sorry, no.

6. Yes, but in that case you have to use a cable to connect the external battery. I think redvolt is definitely important, it allows you to make some handheld shots with less weight and more mobility.

7. the brain will rise in cost. I dont know whether the package will rise...just order the scarlet now! ^_^

3. It is true you dont need the touch screen to access the features. However, what about when touch focus and touch tracking becomes available for the canon mount, I believe you will need the touch LCD for that.

7. I doubt the package price will remain the same.

for the rest of the questions, I agree with the answers so far

You only need a brain with canon mount, a redmote and a power cable. Shoot blind and capture via HDMI to a blackmagic shuttle extreme to your laptop !! :) :)

seriously though, for studio work you can get by cheap if you don;t mind bypassing raw

Seems silly to shoot blind when hdmi LCDs with the same resolution as the 5" lcd (800x480) can be had for ~$150 :P

I intend to do it the cheapest way as well, and the REDmote looks like the best and most flexible way to control the camera in addition to being the least expensive. You definitely don't need the side handle or redvolts which is good since you need to spend nearly $3k to power your camera that way. With the XLR power cable and a inexpensive 3rd party plate and batteries/chargers it's looking like you could do power (cables, plate, batteries, chargers) for as little as $750ish.

Basically I think you could pull it off for $12k if you went with an inexpensive lens.

You definitely need a REDMAG for RAW, but you could probably get away with one 64GB REDMAG SSD (and split a 4pack with a couple people to save on that) and just shoot 18:1 compression so you get 1hr of 4k, 2hrs of 3k or 4hrs of 2k

Thank you everyone for your insights and taking the time to respond. It is most helpful!!
