lots of noise when using mic and adapter

I recently tried a MKH 416 t-power mic with a phantom power adapter on a 744 and was getting bad noise with the mic just sitting there. Has anybody else run into this problem?

Check your 744 inputs as I believe it offers both Phantom and T Power options - if you select the T Power input then you don't require to use an adapter.

May not be the problem but it is worth checking.

We use a T powered 416 on a Sound Devices 302 with no noise issues.

It only allows phantom power, I don't know why this is.

Sounds the power adaptor might not be working. Can you try on another T power device or check the input is OK ? work out which one is bad.

I am finding that my Epic M has very low input values on mic level. To get a decent SNR I am having to pump headphone line level into the mic inputs. Adjusting the inputs on the internal mixer just causes massive amounts of noise.

The T-powered mikes typically require 12VDC; you may need a T-to-phantom 48V adapter in order to make a mike this old work. I also suspect an external mike mixer will provide better quality sound in the long run. If you do that and feed line-level into the camera, I think you'll be better off. I would also advise recording on a separate sound recorder and only to use the Red as a backup. (No criticism on Red -- I say this for all digital cameras.)
