Looking to get back into the RED game with a last minute 2023 purchase. I really like the Monstro but I know it's now slightly older tech. I can get a CF kit for about the same price as a Komodo X package. Curious what you all might think as the better camera or purchase moving into 2024.

For me this comes down to:

1. Do you want a VV or S35 format size?
1b. 8K or 6K?
2. Do you want Global Shutter?
3. Are you okay purchasing an older used body?
4. Do you see advantages in changing the CSF/OLPF filters for your work?

I'll stand on firm ground and say Komodo-X is probably the most alluring "new" camera with it's price to performance ratio.

I'll also say, there's lots of Monstros out there working hard as the only thing beyond it is really Raptor. I personally didn't sell either of my Monstros.

But I also bought a Komodo-X and it's been on a rental for about 2 months now, comes back in Jan 2024!

All great points, thanks Phil! I really want VV but I'm not stuck to it. 8K or 6K can work for me. I can live without Global shutter. I'm fine with a used camera. I've never changes or used the OLPF filters so I'd need to learn more about the benefits of it.

I think the only kickback is I have EF and have started buying RF lenses so my RF lenses won't work on the Monstro. I would rent PL glass for larger productions though. I think I'd get Komodo-X for sure, except the I like the VV look on the Monstro a lot.

I think for me it comes down to the look, do you seem to prefer one over the other or does it depend on the production? Buying a new Komodo-x kit for the price of a used Monstro does seem appealing.

Sounds to me like what you’re really in the market for is a Raptor!
