  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is this a decent package for interviews + an indie film here and there?

Hey Scott,

My thought is to always get the best gear I can afford, nobody can define your passion but you. I bought a SCARLET-W as well and don't regret the money spent. It's what I need to accomplish my goals. Hell I would have bought a WEAPON if the budget allowed!

Years ago I learned the hard way regarding sound, thought I could get away with an inexpensive audio recording device and my sound was unusable. Thankfully at the time we were also capturing audio in the camera (2002).

Today I'm using the following gear:

- Sound Devices 722 (Ebay - field recording)
- Sound Devices 633 (Ebay - field mixing)
- Sound Devices USBPre 2 (Ebay - used for recording audio directly to Mac - handy for web content)
- Sennheiser MKH-416 shotgun mic (B&H)
- Sennheiser EW100 G2 lavs (Ebay - not used that often, prefer the shotgun mic)
- Heil PR-40 (Ebay - used for doing voiceover work, or web related content)

It sounds like you have already scored some audio gear, but wanted to share what I use.

Cheers,

Paul

I wouldn't have gone with the Zoom H6 myself, bit poor value in my view vs a Tascam DR-60D (or DR-70D).

In my view this is the order of audio gear to consider starting from the bottom:
Zoom H1 (or Tascam DR-05, but it is a bit bulkier than the H1. Which is one reason I purchased the H1 as my first ever recorder, its small size with a lav makes the H1 work as a poor man's "wireless" set up, but not wireless obviously.... :-P For such reasons I still use the Zoom H1 to this day! :-D )
Tascam DR-60D mk2 (best pre-amps in its price class and two XLR inputs! Plus handy features such as a safety track. I myself have the older DR-60D mk1, which I got for an absolutely bargain just before the mk2 came out)
Tascam DR-70D (like above, but more XLR inputs)
Tascam DR-680D mk2 (like above, but even *more* XLR inputs, plus a few more features)
Zoom F8 (feature packed x1000!)
Then once you get a budget beyond here... you're starting to play in the proper leagues, and can look at the various Sound Devices for instance (I now use a SD522, which is a very well priced secondhand mixer/recorder. Or as a cheaper option think about pairing a SD302 with a Tascam DR-60D).

So those are the options, now just pick one which matches your budget :)
