Does the Nikon Mount on a Scarlet-X Camera allow automatic focusing of the lens, and other auto functions as well?

We will be purchasing a Scarlet, so I just want to know what our options are.

Thanks,

George

Hi George!

I have a Scarlet-X with Nikon Mount from RED, yes it allows auto focus if your lens does. But I prefer manual follow focus as I think the auto focus can be a little slow and inaccurate (depending on your lighting and lenses)
The rack focus function is great, you simply touch and set focus of the two points you want to rack between on your screen, then you "half press" the rec-button on your side handle to rack between the points.
Works great! :)

(I don´t think aftermarket mounts supports auto focus (e.g Long Valley) correct me if I´m wrong)

Hi George... glad you're getting a Scarlet, amazing camera.

I also have a Nikon 'smart' mount from RED. I honestly wish there was a "dumb" mount available since I never use the full features of it, I'm more old school where I like to focus myself and I just like manual more anyway. I'm on old firmware (2.-something) but am getting updated as we speak (camera's finally being officially transferred to my name this week) but I had huge issues with either the mount or the firmware, or a combination of both.

The first lens I tried on it is my general DSLR zoom, a G 18-200 VR. It's not great for video but I just wanted to check it out. It freaked the camera out, purple splotches everywhere on the monitor, just went nuts. I quickly got that off of there and put on a retro prime (28mm). That was normal, all good. Same thing with my other primes, as far as I can tell... since they're all 'dumb' lenses, all manual. However, my favorite all-purpose lens I use on my Scarlet is my hard-to-find Tokina AT-X Pro II 28-70... love it. However, when I would be shooting a high contrast scene or going from light to dark or vice versa, the lens would freak out and cycle open and closed twice, then park itself on a new F/stop. When the lighting is nice and even, it's all good. I assumed it was something to do with the lens but I made sure was on 'manual' so obviously something on the camera's end is cycling it open and closed. I'm just hoping that with the firmware update, it'll be all good.

It should be noted that the RED Nikon mount will only function, for focusing, with auto focus lenses that have internal motors. Not all Nikon auto focus lenses have motors built in. Also it will only currently function with those lenses that Red has programmed into the firmware. That list is being updated as new lenses are added.

Ahhhh, very good to know.

That pretty much makes it an accessory we'll probably rarely use, if ever.

Thanks.
