  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have suggested the use of an iMac 24" computer as an ingest station, the monitor quality and size are far superior to a mac book pro and it provides a bit more of a wow factor when looking at footage on set.

actually the macbook pro offers the same resolution screen
 
yes i know, but not the same user/client experience.

22.5 inches by 13.5 inches of screen vs 13" x 8"

it makes a difference to advertising agencies, record companies, artists, actors, directors, DOPs.

it is a lot more real estate to look at, or show off the footage on...yes same resolution but much bigger sexier image...

i know many of you are resisting this, but it is "very niiice".

it is roughly 3 times the area of the mac book pro...303 sq inches vs 104 sq inches, i have both, i know and i have seen the reaction first hand, over and over again. oh and it's a grand cheaper.
 
their are two down sides to the iMac however, it's size sucks for lugging it around, hence the case link...

there is no way to get an express card into it for an eSata drive...

As an editor, I have always been an advocate of the iMac over the MacBooks as a mobile (although not easily "portable") draft workstation or impressive presentation computer, but how does the power capacity of the 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme and a maximum of 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM in the iMac 24" function with the various RED files vs the recommended Mac Pro's 8 cores and fast RAID 0 striped drives?

Of course use the 8 Core for the work, this is just to get everyone excited on set where the big money is being spent...
 
Gotcha! That is what I thought you meant. I was just making sure that I hadn't overlook a much cheaper path to RED workflow. Darn, I had a moment of hoping ...

The path to cheaper workflow is paved with delaying heavy processing steps until after picture lock. You can today cut a 1K proxie in FCP on a Macbook Pro, and preview and grade Redcode in realtime in Redcine at 1/4 Res Medium. all off a Firewire 800 drive.

8 cores will help you no doubt. But the zen workflow master says they are no match for proper execution.

true, we have done our share of cutting and compositing on set with the iMac with its 2.8 ghz dual processors and 4 gigs of ram...fun fun fun
 
There's one advantage to the MacBook Pro and that is the Express card slot. That enables the possibility for SATA Raid on set. At least I see that as an advantage. What do you guys say which has the gear already. Is firewire enough or would you benefit from SATA Raid?

i mentioned that in post #5.

i was on set for my first rental about 4 days after getting the camera and the director had a mac book pro 17 and a two drive eStata raid he purchased at guitar center, it worked great and was very fast.

so i recommend having one of those too, but usually the director has one, (it has happened 4 times since that first rental).

so, yes eSata is very cool and i have seen the drives that go directly into the pcmcia slot (or what ever it is called now).

but 800 fw Gtec drives with the white 800 cords download a 8 gb card in 3.5 minutes. that is fast enough.

but see my other help post...please dwnload the whole cf card including the 3 "other " files, you will need them in a few weeks...
 
This thread has ventured away from the initial Pelican case post (although it is a very useful tip, thanks) and I am glad for the diversion because I have not found an existing thread that has already covered the current topic!

Please let me know if post production system configurations has been covered in depth elsewhere. If it has not, maybe a new thread should be started with a title better reflecting the topic.

On the miraculous chance that I could indeed be able to aim my aspirations and acquisitions toward the land of RED, I am currently trying to sort out the budget requirements and possible system configurations scenarios for an effective post production system.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from those active RED ONE users as to what they are editing on and how it is working for them.

Red.com has this to say about post work flow ...
* Shoot 4K REDCODE RAW @27MB/sec.
* Load footage into REDCINE Do 1st light correction.
* Export to any number of output options.
* REDCINE is supported on Intel Mac and Windows XP only.

Hmmm ... ah yes … there’s also the release stating the REDCODE Raw codec is now enabled for Final Cut. However they only mention working with 1K and 2K movie files. What about 4K?

What system configuration would need to be put together to work with 4K files? Is it reasonable to think that a lowly freelance editor could even touch a 4K capable system?

Kosmos3d, so far, you have endorsed the big Mac Pro, the MacBook Pro and the iMac 24 ... (I know each has their specific application) but considering I will only be able to get one system, what would you recommend as the dream post workflow configuration ... from the file download from RED ONE to final delivery to client? Think indie and corporate rather than epic blockbuster and big budget.

Does anybody else feel inspired to outline their working RED ONE editing system? I don’t need any cost information just a simple equipment and software outline would be great.

I just finished my long post in the "iMac 24" Case" thread and then returned to the New Post page only to see the brand new thread "Visualization possible workflows".

This will help a lot! Thanks to "Dip" for reading my mind even before I could finish typing my thoughts.
