  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So since updating to 3.0 a while back with the firmware I have been getting random frozen frames when my scarlet is in idle powered on mode. it usually happens after I stop recording or is the camera sits on for a while. if I go to power off the scarlet since all menu's work it just I have a frozen frame on my screen upon restarting i get a screen with grey bars. touch functionality is still present and I can mount and unmount media but can't play back without distortion and can't get any info from the sensor basically of what is in front of the camera... I email a log file to RED over a week ago and still haven't recieved an answer. I have tried downgrading, factory resests and anything I can come up with.

If I let the camera rest for 15-20 minutes I can then start it up and use it for a moment again before the same process repeats...

any info welcomed! about to embark on a 20 day shot traveling globally and bit worried if the camera will make it...

Stressful times, mine had black shading issues after upgrading to firmware 3.0, it was unusable and just before being contracted for a feature film. RED said it had to go back, having to rent everyday now which is eating away at all my profits. This camera has already cost me $7K in losses, on top of the price and I haven't even used it. Best to send yours back to and get it fixed, RED are pretty fast unlike these damn customs in LA that take too long. Get a ticket, send log file and get it fixed before you depart. And I would never go without a backup after this issue. I will buy a Canon 5D mark 3 and keep it in my arsenal for peace of mind. Plenty out there seem to have trouble free experiences, I look forward to the same. ;)

So I am trying to get to the root of this. I have stripped my camera down to bare set up with wall power. I have run it for two hours now sporatically recording and stopping and turning off and on camera. I then updated to version 3.0.0 from 2.0.5 and kept running the camera. so far when just running DC from the wall the camera has not failed. I am beinging to suspect something with either my back plate / V mount batteries or the side handle or maybe the combo of running them at the same time. I will now continue my test and run the camera a while from the v mount. side handle still removed. I will update once i have tried and either the camera runs fine or crashes.

OK, been running the camera all day now. updated with a fresh copy of 3.0 and did a blackshade test.

All the tests below included running of the camera at least 30-60 minutes. recording, stop recording, powering on and powering off camera several times as well as just letting the camera run in idle.

ran it on DC, no problem
ran it on V-lock, no problem
ran it on redvolt, no problem
ran it combo redvolt and DC, no problem
ran it on combo redvolt and V-lock, no problem.

I couldn't get it to crash again after this morning when I was running it with a V-lock. I'm hopinh after all the testing and updates and stuff I am in the clear. I will run a few more tests tomorrow since my theory was that the camera was crashing due to the dual power supplies...

Murphy's Law sez it will NOT crash till you are on set.
So get a paying client - THAT should flush the little bastid out.

;)

You certainly seem to have run it thru its paces. Doesn't sound like you would be any further ahead sending it in since maybe RED would have as much trouble as you in replicating the problem.
sorry Man.
