Hey folks,

Just a couple of quick questions...

1) If we're shooting a feature, how much total storage do we need?

I'm figuring 30 mb/sec x 1-2 hrs/day (roughly filling a 320 gb RedDrive on a good day of shooting) x 2 cameras x 22 day shoot = 8-14 TB for the shoot

I figure this yields a shooting ratio of around 25.

Is this more or less right?

2) What are the options for offloading data in the field vs storage vs backup?

I'm sure there are lots of options, but I'm figuring that nice enterprise quality RAID drives are the way to go. But it would be nice to have a cheap way to create an extra set of backups...

Most likely we'll default to something like the Sony AIT-3Ex External Drive, but tape seems so... 20th century. Know what I mean? Like, have you heard about Maxell’s stacked volumetric optical disc (SVOD)? Composed of thin layers of DVD media stacked together in a small space, one SVOD cartridge store just under a terabyte of data (940 GB). They're working on a 1.6 terabyte version now.

It would be nice if one of our more learned brethren could compile a comprehensive list of options, with the comparative cost/benefit/drawbacks/reliability of each device, for this critical issue.

Thanks guys!

I would say a 2 hours feature film, shot with a ratio of 25:1 with two cameras, would end with approximately (100GB x (2 heures x 25 x 2 cameras), 10TB of REDCODE RAW files. Not talking about the RGB version....

Even if the tape seems 20th century it is the most affordable-solid solution out there at the moment.
