Hey RED Friends!

I'm about to go on an incredible journey as a filmmaker, Burning Man! Just a little worried about the weather conditions.

How does the RED do in high heat with dusty conditions? Any suggestions to prep and protect the camera while it's out there?

Thanks in advance!

It'll be fine in the heat, turn the fans on adaptive or ride them on high. Don't change lenses outside if you can. Try and protect everything with a bag or something from the dust if you can, even if its not blowing it gets caked on absolutely everything.

If you follow the above advice, it'll do well. I've shot out near Lancaster a few months back. Got dust on everything though, so it's preferable to use some sort of protection.

And yes, don't change lenses out in the open. The fan/heatsink area is sealed, the sensor area electronics aren't.

Shade helps a lot. On 105+ degree days in the AZ desert I put a cold pack in front of the air intake to keep the fans running quietly during dialogue. Otherwise, the camera does a decent job of cooling if given shade.

BHphoto (and probably others) sell inexpensive rain / dust bags. Probably you need largest - wonder if one end could have HVAC filter paper or filter foam taped in to allow airflow but keep dust out
Let me know what you come up with - have a desert shoot planned

The dust is Alkali - bring a (very) fine particle dust mask for yourself.

Protect front of lenses - dust storms might 'sand' them down (very slightly).

The dust is very very fine - gets into lens mechanics when they breathe.

Enjoy!
