  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How do you guys work with the linear gamma setting?

Once again, I have another question about the linear setting in RedcineX (or other programs that open R3D files).

When doing VFX I prefer to work with a linear gamma setting. If I get log files, I convert them to linear (within the application) and so on. Sometimes I get linear EXRs and they work really good.

Now, in RedcineX you have the option to render EXRs (with linear gamma). If I import this into my VFX application (AE or Nuke) I get a very dark image. Even when viewing it with an sRGB lut, it's very dark. Impossible to work with. So what I do is add an exposure effect and boost the exposure (linear) a couple of stops till I get a normal looking image. Then I work with it without any problems.

But for output, I don't know what to do. Normally I would like to output my VFX to something that matches the no-vfx shots, so it would be nice to render out as Redlog for example. But that doesn't work. If I apply a lin2redlog node (custom in AE, built in to Nuke) my image gets destroyd. It seems like Redlog can't hande the values. Whish is strange becuse I don't have any overbright in the scene, just normal values. Outputting to a normal log curve seems to work most of the time. Why is this, why can't I output to Redlog?

Is it wrong to boost the exposure? I determine how much exposure to add by rendering out a redlog file from RedcineX and the linerizing it. Now I have a good looking linear image. Then I adjust the exposure on the EXR to match that.

What am I doing wrong?
