  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone tried low-level formatting to recover CFexpress card speed?

Hi everyone,

I've been shooting a lot of 8K RAW and ProRes HQ lately, and like many of you, I've noticed that CFexpress Type B cards can slow down significantly over time — especially after repeated long takes and overwrites.

Out of curiosity, I picked up a reader on Amazon called the CFTek Trimmer. It supports low-level formatting and factory reset for CFexpress cards — something I hadn’t seen in most other readers.

To my surprise, I was able to restore one of my ProGrade cards that had dropped to ~650MB/s back up to around 1200MB/s write speed. The device also displays card temperature, PCIe/USB connection speed, and estimated remaining lifespan, which I found helpful for long-form shoots and card health monitoring.

Just to clarify — I’m not affiliated with the brand and not trying to sell anything. I bought it myself off Amazon (I think it's currently the only way to get it in the US) and thought it might be useful to share this in case anyone else is running into similar performance issues.

Curious if anyone here has used tools like this, or how you're managing CFexpress performance degradation in your workflow. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!
