  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have a general setup question from something that I have been assigned (and know ____ about).

-- A little background on the setup--

Doing a documentary and have a Red One? camera. The documentary is going to be about 30 minutes long. This will be playing on TV and will probably also be playing locally in the cinema.

Taking 4k video which will then be converted to whatever is necessary.

Using Final Cut Pro - latest version.

There will be 1-2 mac workstations that will need access to this footage for manipulation / etc.

We do have individuals here that are familiar with the FC software, but haven't had a need for anything in hardware robust enough to handle something of this size.

:headwall: The Problem :headwall:

I have no idea the work flow involved with taking the raw images -> completed render.

As an educated guess, I will need an Xserve with Compressor to do the rendering, with a SAN and the 1-2 mac workstations connected via Fiber. (3k Mbs).

Can anyone help me with a hardware list and/or a guide to getting the right setup and configuration for the task at hand?

I need to get some out-of-the-box type solution without ending with a steaming mess to sift through. I have been reading through a few things and can't find anything resembling a guild to a cookie cutter type solution for this.

Thanks,

Matt

File types

I guess you will be editing 1920x1080?

You need to figure out what filetypes you will end up with, if you are going to make 30 minutes of 1920x1080 DPX files to send out for a filmout you will need a large disk(s) to put them on, and it will take a while to do the export+CC on them. You can figure the disk space based on 4bytes per pixel plus 5-10%, maybe.

I honestly dont know what size we'll be editing. I have read that 2k was the max for FC Pro without dumping to an XML file and importing to one of the Red software.

I'm not worried about the storage space. I'm mainly concerned with the interconnectivity of the hardware/software with focus on speed and efficiency.
