A trade in program like the R1!
Thats what I asked for when the prices got cut.
Perfect, only RED.
Jarred told me not to worry, Scarlet owners would not be forgotten.
All the haters out there, call me a fanboy but call me happy, I'm gonna miss Pazuzu, but Captain Howdy is coming home!

Not to be a Debby Downer but it might be 2014 before we see this trade in program open for Scarlets. There are a lottttttt of Epics that have priority. RED is going to be insanely busy.

Either way its an awesome deal. Gives us Scarlet users time to save up and to invest in Lenses and other equipment getting ready for Dragon.

I agree Patrick, but sooo excited right now!

My guess is $17-20.000 (based on current Epic price plus Dragon update price minus Scarlet X price)

There's no point guessing as its going to be a while before you see the trading program begin. So many variables in the cost of electronics that prices will probably be announced a month before the assembly starts. In any case, there's plenty of time to start saving for the new king of the hill.

I think it might depend on the purchase price. I for one paid about 10k for my Scarlet so the upgrade could cost about 16k.
My Scarlet paid itself in about 3 months so 16k for the most revolutionary digital cinema camera ever is fine by me.
Bring it on!

I was planing to buy a epic anyways in the coming months, (too many jobs with higher frame rates) so I'm rethinking keeping my scarlet as a back up to my epic, or just do the trade in when it comes? The cost factor is not a issue to me, it's the convince factor to me more.

I'm happy too that I can trade in our Scarlet X. But it would have been nice to have a "2nd tier" option to get less than premium performance for a much lower price tag.
I believe most of us Scarleteers will have to have $20K to do this upgrade when it's available.

Not complaining though! Thanks Red!

Well, the question is if you will be able to buy an Epic with Dragon before all the Epic MXs are upgraded. In that case it might be smart to wait so you don't get in the back of the upgrade line. But that's anyones guess.

I don't think your Scarlet will depreciate in value for some time, though.

Jarred said somewhere that they will be selling Dragon Epics during the upgrade process.
Something about the manufacturing process being much solid now.
That also means we should have much lesser upgrade times, good news for Scarlet owners as we all are behind the epic line.

+1 Amen to that!

I love that we have this option to look forward too.

Till then, bring on 1+ MODULE and DSMC TACTICAL options.

I want to live in the NOW with my SCARLET ;)

How do you know Scarlet owners are all behind the epic line? It sounds like they don't want to hold up the distribution of new Epic-D bodies while waiting for Epic-X's to get upgraded, so now that Scarlet is not an upgrade but a trade in, that seems to imply that they could be completely different and simultaneous production/upgrade lines. Epic owners have to wait for their number to come up and get their camera's internals upgraded, whereas Scarlet users are sending in their cameras and trading them for a brand new Epic-D's, which are produced independent from the Epic upgrade process. Scarlet owners are basically just buying new Epic-D bodies but happen to have a discount in the form of their traded in Scarlets but perhaps with some priority over new Epic-D buyers?

I don't think that'll stop everyone from giving their 2c. This is RedUser. ;)

So excited about Dragon and an upgrade path, whatever, whenever, and howmuchever it'll be.

Time to start padding that savings account.

Noah, it's been said a lot that first epic owners and then scarlet owners.
That was the upgrade path. Now, with the trade in option you might be right.

My new years resolution is to finish my film before I buy the dragon upgrade - lmao - i am feeling time pressured: Hey Jim/Jarred ... take your time !

My internal mantra is to maximize what i Have, I did buy the epic since I guessed that it won't be till 2014 till the upgrade program will be in full swing. I'm sure a bunch of scarlet to epic converts here can tell you how great it is that all the scarlet equipment just works perfectly with the epic. I do mean perfectly, I had zero issues and all I bought was a epic brain ... so used all my scarlet components to build my epic from my scarlet components: side handle, redmode, redtouch, sideSSD, 128 and 64 meg ssd, both my canon and PL mounts. RED's component architecture really is amazing, i don't think it's touted enough.

Also, having all the equipment directly usable on the epic has really made the cost of moving from scarlet to epic much more affordable. Really a full cinema setup costs when you look at all the parts (lenses, side handles, ssd, etc) over $100k to $200K, so as i built up a complete production the cost of the brain upgrade becomes a smaller percentage of the entire pie. It has really allowed me to attempt to play with the big boys, but now i feel I really need to close on my goals.

RED is evolving very fast, it is not the same company it was even 12 months ago and it appears that upgrades and new releases drop much closer to schedule. You could be right, let us hope so.
