Final Sound Mix for Short Film

Hello Redusers,

I am just going through the final mix with a local sound studio for my 11 minute short film. What are people usually mixing to? Is LtRt necessary? Dolby digital? Any advice would be appreciated.

Depends on where it will be shown. For a short you should be able to get away with stereo.

You might consider mono if you won't have control over where it will be shown and/or if it will be shown mostly on the web.

I've seen stereo (and fancier) destroyed by poor sound setups, and there are lots of places where stereo won't matter much (like the web). If there isn't an enormous benefit to doing stereo, it might be worth it to be conservative.

Thanks for your input guys. I have wondered on this recently. I am considering just a stereo mix for online and a mono mix for festivals.

I would stick with stereo, to preserve the stereo field of a music score. Obviously the mix should be mono compatible - no real reason for dialogue to be anything but mono typically anyways though. Mono compatibility and varied / uncontrolled playback systems IS a real concern - good to note that.
