Playing around with a trial version of FCPX, and had a quick question:

What’s your workflow for going from editing station with media on external RAID, to laptop, and back?

Would it work to create optimized media on ingest, click leave media in place; but, save optimized media to portable external HDD as well as library’s, events, projects and backups, then relink to R3D’s on main system/external RAID when done? Keep everything except original R3D files on small portable drive, and nothing on internal?

Thanks!

It may help you a lot.

I don't create optimized media or proxies.

This is definitely the way to go. Any modern MBP should be able to handle editing footage without creating any optimized media or proxies.

For the original poster, what you have described should work fine, but as mentioned you likely don't need to create optimized media or proxies. Just use 'Better Performance' mode while editing.

The tools FCPX has to move media from Library to Library actually work quite well also. You can work on a "Remote Library" to do editing on the go, and when you are back home move those Events to your main library you are working out of for that project. There is some good info on moving around events and media in FCPX here: https://support.apple.com/kb/PH12766?locale=en_US

I would recommend doing some testing to make sure you have everything sorted and should be good to go. If you are going to work from the same external RAID than you can just keep everything on there, but if you need to transfer from workstation to mobile that process can be done inside of FCPX pretty easily. Disabling optimized media and proxies and even bg render can make moving these files a bit easier and I find I often don't need them in most cases.
