  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys, we are currently editing a feature off two Gtech raids in Premier and the bloat is starting to make really simple actions like rewinding take time, I am going to compile the essential 4 hours and move it over to a more powerful work station, but I need a fast drive to match it, what drive around 4tb would you recommend.

Its 4k red code shot at 7:1.

The new work station is a PC, so USB3 or ESATA, but I do have a hub so thunderbolt could work.

I just talked to Steve Hitchcock at Lacie 'cos we use their drives for CineGrain and he says they're releasing a new drive at the end of FEB, a Little Big Disk (daisy chainable) with SSD and thunderbolt 2 and the connections inside are PCIe instead of eSATA so they won't be bottle necking at the connection points. Thunderbolt 2 is way faster than eSATA, thunderbolt 2 with PCIe connections is as fast as it gets. but it's gonna be like $1,500 for just the 1TB.

The Promise Thunderbolt2 RAIDs claim to be 10Gb/S:

What I would worry about is how well they hold up under day-in/day-out use. If it were me, I would edit with lower-res HD proxies and only worry about linking to the full-res 4K or 5K files at the very end of the post process.

I have yet to see Thunderbolt work well with PCs.

I use the Pegasus R6 units daily, they're great. I can't speak for windows users experiences with them though. I get real speeds around 550-600MB/sec. More than enough.

In fact, your drives may not be the issue. Premiere seems to get a little bogged down with large projects riddled with R3Ds. The disk speed requirements to playback 4K @ 7:1 are not as heavy as you might think.

+1 on the Pegasus RAIDs -- they have been solid here and can just about saturate a 10Gbps Thunderbolt channel. The new Pegasus2 RAIDs are even faster over Thunderbolt 2. On the Thunderbolt 2 interface, both 10Gbps channels combine to form a single 20Gbps channel. I have the 18TB 6-disk Pegasus2 and I'm getting really good speeds out of it. The 8-disk unit is even faster. The 24TB (8 x 3TB) unit is giving speeds over 1400MB/s.
