Hi all,

I have a Red project shot in 23.976 that is going to studio for ADR. The studio is limited to DV over firewire monitoring and the engineer is not clear in his instructions. They are running a recent Pro Tools HD system through what appears to be the Canopus ADVC 110 to a television via S-Video.

Is it possible to keep the project in it's native time base while monitoring a DV stream that is 29.97 fps and still be able to spot cues and stay in synch or do we have to alter the entire project's time base?

What is the best method for working here? My own Pro Tools experience is limited to DV, so I never learned to deal with other frame rates and this limitation.

Thank you for your responses.

Its been ages since I've dealt with DV playout in ADR but I think ProTools allows for the push of frames within its own software. You should be able to export 23.976p DV stream without incident. Talk with the studio to be certain.

Thanks

But their gear didn't work with 23.976 video out.

I've done some looking through the Protools manual and haven't found a clear answer yet. It appears to require NTSC or PAL only? While it is possible to use a DV codec to encode a variety of frame rates, is a "DV stream" strictly 29.97 or 25? I don't remember any DV hardware that was able to actually do any different. even the Varicam models are doing some conversion to 29.97 or 25, right?

My contact at the studio has no idea what he requires and our producer seems to think he is their most knowledgeable with regard to video, though I don't think he has asked anyone else.

I'm 80% certain their monitor is NTSC I am equally certain they can only push 29.976 video out. His PT timeline shows the 23.976 frame rate in red. My understanding is that should be alerting him to a mis-match with the video file. That is what has me concerned that the mix will not synch when I get it back.

You could do a frame rate conversion and have him work from that but its a real nightmare down that path. Can he not just use any modern hardware? Protools will output from most any BlackMagic card and from there you can have your ADR talent watch any monitor in native HD 23.976p. If the project is 23.976p and they took the job, they'll have to make it work. A simple I/O card and HDMI monitor is all that's needed.

Make a letterboxed movie in a Standard Def DVNTSC with 29.97 Time code.. its the same speed as 23.976

I hope they do make it work. The engineer made the same observation about the I/O card. There will be no excuse for them if they fail.

That is just what I did. It is in their hands for now.
