  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've noticed on the set when shooting with the Epic, the DP or DIT decides to shoot in a particular compression setting at 24fps, such as 6:1 or 7:1. Then they shoot some high speed shots, so they change the frame rate to something like 96FPS. The camera then asks if it's ok to do a higher compression ratio, such as 12:1, which is great. But then after the high speed shot is completed, and they return to shooting at 24FPS the compression stays at 12:1 and often goes un-noticed.

It would be nice if the camera automatically changed back to a selected best compression ratio, as to always get the best image quality.

Understood but I think part of the problem is the "best compression" idea. The reason for multiple variations to begin with is that there isn't a silver bullet. Best is relative and should be a consideration, same as anything else core to your shoot. But I do agree, it would be wonderful if the UI offered a color/shade cue, on the compression ratio, that would provide the "sweet spot" for best quality versus file size, etc -- based on your frame rate and resolution choice. I can see why having this automatically select would be problematic, but if the UI offered a switch to enable, "default sweet spot" selection, that would be great.

Combine a visual cue with a non-default user selector.

I mentioned something about this in a tread a while back - though not show stoping something would be nice

The issue i've seen, is you are shooting 24fps @ say - 6:1 compression. You switch 120FPS and are prompted (on rec) to change compression setting to 13:1. When you switch back to 24FPS, you forget to switch back to 6:1 compression... (sometimes there is so much going happening on set, that simple things get missed in the rush)

- a reminder (or automatic) to switch back to your 6:1 compression would be nice
- Possibly in the the form of a default compression and shutter setting for a project (?)
- it would also be nice if the compression warning came up when you make the frame rate change - not when REC is pressed for the first time (workaround is to test rec after every frame rate change, but this is sometimes missed on a hectic commercial with frame rate changing often, and worse when camera is on an ultimate arm....)

Of course there's no one size fits all compression ratio, It should definitely be user defined. Having an automatic change back to your selected "default" would be a helpful option, also something that should be toggle-able.

I suggest that the compression rate should only be lowered TEMPORARILY while using the higher frame rate. The constrained compression rate could be shown in another color on the displays. The original setting should be reapplied as soon as the frame rate is lowered again. That's what I would expect.

This feature is slated for a future release.

The compression ratio spinner will select a "desired" compression ratio that the camera will always attempt to meet. If based on settings (resolution, fps, maximum media data-rate, or capture mode) the target is not achievable, the next best setting will be used and will be highlighted in yellow.

Beautiful.

Great stuff - been asking for something like this for a while. Nice to see Red responding to feedback as usual :)

Awesome! Thanks!

Now that's a clever idea. Too many first-time users make mistakes with compression settings no matter how many times they're warned about it. Hope this will come with the Redcolor/gamma 3 build soon. Thanks!
