Hey guys. I wanted to share an iPad / iPhone app that I've just released on the iTunes App Store.

I've been contacted by Jason Wingrove from RedCentre Podcast at FXGuide who shared with me how useful it was for him on a RED / 3D shoot a few days ago.

Its called DSLR Slate, and its just as functional as the traditional film slate, but with items aimed specifically for people shooting with DSLR. I also came up with this "quick burst" mode that people are seeming to really like, allowing you to show the camera far more information per take than was possible in the past with a traditional slate.

To keep things simple, I'll just link to two videos of the app in use and Vincent Laforet's blog post about it.

I'd love to hear what you guys think!
Thanks.

Now if only someone could figure out how to jam sync the timecode to camera/sound that would be truly awesome.

Ha, that's going to be one of the most requested features (actually it already is) and probably THE most difficult feature to implement. I am looking into it...

Thanks for checking it out.

I think the best bet to jam-sync the timecode to the iPad is through the Camera Connection Kit. It essentially has a loophole in the developer requirements that allows streaming data from connected third-party camera hardware. It's meant for web cams, video, offloading large quantities of stills, etc.. But there's no reason a timecode signal couldn't be pulled in with the proper adaptation.

I admittedly haven't looked that deeply into the CCK or developing for it. But as it stands, the only other ways I'm aware of possibly getting usable timecode input would be in violation to Apple's developer requirements for third-party devices. Personally, I think a great solution here might be to approach a company like Sound Devices or Denecke with your timecode application and see if they would be willing to get Apple Device approval for one or more of their timecode products that have serial or USB timecode support. Then it would be possible to support it directly using a standard USB to dock connector cable from an "Apple approved" timecode device.

Thanks for all that info Jeff, I will definitely look into it!

Now its getting confusing, did you double post or some one else posted the same thing?

Any way since I have the iPad I'm surely interested, so Chris, if this app would allow for it to be used professionally, just change the name from DSLR slate to anything else, please, kinda of a turn off here ;~)

Btw Chris, welcome to Reduser, but since this is a real name forum, you need to change it, go to http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=32432

I bought this - kinda like it and would use a lot. Biggest problem = Take # changing. Should be able to just tap the number to advance it. Even better would be the ability to draw the Scene and Take fields with a finger to change.

I like it though. Hands down the best slate app to date IMHO.

Thanks Shawn. I've already added incremental take control ON the slate screen. Along with several more added features. Next build should be submitted shortly. Not too sure about the hand drawing. If it becomes a popular request, I'll look more into it. Thanks for the support!

Great! Amazing that my iPhone can now be an insert slate. Good work, looking forward to the TC jamsync as well!

Thanks Chris! I am submitting an update today. Version 1.1 includes lots of new features, SOME of which I made a quick video about a few days back. You can see the video at www.lastshotapps.com.

As for the timecode, we will be looking into all possible solutions for the future.

Thanks
-Chris

I used this app on an mv shoot and it was great. Version 1.1 should address alot of the issues we had.

Would it be possible to make the ipad a master clock and jam the camera out of the headphone jack? There is another app that uses the headphone jack to send timecode, but it is a master clock?

Just Crashes

Just Crashes

I bought this for my iphone 3G, used once and there is new update, so i updated. Now it doesn't work. When i hit the open slate, it just crashes. It is not a expensive program but i still felt i need my money back.

Not very patient, eh? Maybe some tech support - the guy seems to be on top of necessary updates.

He spent better part of an hour late last night working thru a serious IO error when I bought and could not get the sync tone to work.

(IO error.... Idiot Operator:) ) New iPhone owner and did not know about the "silent" switch on the upper left:)

Although not tailored to Red, sure puts a lot of info on the screen.
