I just want to relay this information I guess as a cautionary tale, and perhaps to see if anyone has some info.

I started a job recently and I'm on the road working with several cameras. There's alot of air travel involved so laptops are the only thing that is going to fly. Currently I'm using two 17inch Macbook pros with Sonnett Tempo Express 34 Cards feeding 1TB G-drive-Qs.

This is the same system I've been using essentially since I started doing this stuff. I haven't changed hardly anything. But suddenly I start having this experience where mid-transfer one of the drives mounted on E-sata will suddenly dismount. It started happening and got to a point where you could only move maybe 8GB onto a drive before it would dismount. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason for when it happens.

But what's worse once the problem started happening, it started happening even if one stopped using E-sata and tried for example to mount the drive via FW800 or even via USB2.0. Even if I move that drive over to a different machine and try to mount it via USB2.0 the problem continues to happen.

I thought at first maybe I got a bad batch of drives (strange that the same happened on two drives.) Until then I got a third shuttle drive that has been in use for a while into the mix. I know that drive to be reliable over several shows. Suddenly that drive is spontaneously dismounting, mounting only sometimes and many times you cannot look into subdirectories on the drive. Even if you get rid entirely of the E-sata and take the drive over to a different system the problem will persist.

So what's happening. Is this a software problem, filesystem problem or a hardware problem. I've tried running Disk Warrior on the drives, it does a few things but that doesn't help. Boomarang can't scan the drives long enough to work. I've tried running verbose copies in the terminal and it will just eventually hang.

I've never seen this before, and the brokenness just seems infectious. Any clarity you can pass my way might be helpful, otherwise beware and do not anger the SATA gods.
