HELLO ALL.
I'm very excited as we have a documentary in Colombia comming up in June, its going to be 20 days on the field with the R1! With this excitement comes stress as well...specialy storage questions. We won't have an office nearby to store each day's material, so we have to pack up several hard-drives. I was thinking of getting the 1 gb G-tech minis. Any other recomendations?
Also the real question is how many will I need? We are doing interviwes and shooting pickups etc. I'm thinking about 1.5 hours of footage daily...@ 4k 24fps 2:1 aspect RC36= 147GB
X 20 DAYS=2940 GB.
Should I take some 4 TB plus my two Red drives?
Does that sound reasonable? any similar experiences?

Thanks guys for your help as always,
take care,
ƒ

Currently on a similar project.
1/2 of the way threw right now in shooting.

Here is what we have decided to do.
9 drives and growing.
3 master drives / 3 backup drives / 3 drives that go to a safe location strictly for away from location safety backup.
While on set download to master drive and backup immediately.
These 2 drives never live together do not travel together do not stay together. You get the picture.
Use your 3rd drive when you have down time fill it up and send it away far far away.

We use the 1.5 TB internal S-ATA Segate drives from Frys $130 each.
They play nice in the computers and in external cases.
Once the Master drive has filled up with 100GB left of space it becomes the master drive in our Apple 8Core edit bay computer. It strictly carries the R3D files. This allows the editor to work right away.
Purchase 3 external nice after market cases with fan inside. The nice way to go is to have FW-800 / FW-400 / E-Sata and USB connection.
Cases very universal and can be used for future usage.

Currently we have filled up 2 drives and in 1 more day of shooting will be going to the 3rd drive.

Just be sure to backup and then backup another level deep and send that 3r backup to your producers home or somewhere the other drives are NOT.

hopefully that helps.

btw why shoot 2 to 1 you can go 16x9 no problem and shooting 4k HD is our preferred set up
the 4K HD goes nicely into 1080p delivery.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY BIGLU!
Very helpful indeed. I have some Caldigit external housings, which use an internal seagate drive of 1tb ...the drives themselves cost 100usd...so I'm going to go with that option, and buy a few of those..
thanks again, hope your shoot is gooing well, and your data is safe!
take care

Here's a question.

How well can you scale up and crop out something near the edge at that resolution? For example if the boom mic gets in the shot. Is it noticeable to crop from one clip and not the next, or will it stand out? There seems to be resolution to spare, so should be okay. No?

I think I understand your question but I may be way off.
Forgive me if I am.

4K HD is ideal
Ok say one of your shots needs re-cropping or a pushin.

For every shot you need to re-frame and or re adjust you have the power in Red Alert, or REDCine and several other programs to do that from the 4K file without a problem and still size down to 1080p

hope that helps
