  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do I really need Neo3D if I have CS5 AE?

Do I need Neo3D if I am competent with CS5 AE? I can adjust convergence, fix color differences, keystone, fix lens miss-match issues. I can output side by side, over-under, interlace, etc. Plus I can make templates that incorporate these fixes and use multiple output modules, etc. I don't need the text overlay capabilities. Granted, I haven't worked in 3D before, so please let me know if I am missing something.

Thanks!
Phil

We have shot and processed over a 1000 hours of 3d with just AE, I don't think you need Neo3D but it can be helpful when editing 3D in CS5 PR. I think there will be some cool tips for working in 3d on videocopilot soon.

Neo 3D is magical though!

I have now shot over 800 hours of underwater 3D (my specialty) and processed all of it through Neo 3D. You probably can get AE to do everything Neo does, just as you can get AE to do most of what anything else does :-) but despite its little bugs and annoyances, Neo has simplified my life and advanced my understanding of 3d enormously, just cause it allows me to play with so many parameters in real time, that it has been instrumental in my "getting" how to work 3D. It ain't cheap at $3K, but it is a wonderful software, which includes the Cineform codec itself, the best codec there is, bar none, to do color grading and other demanding processes. Color grading underwater footage is very, very difficult, and Cineform is the only codec that lets me do things to footage that would break anything else. According to what you say, AE allows you to do most of what Neo does, but I doubt AE is as easy and intuitive to use as Neo, then again, saving 3 grand ain't bad either...

The power of Neo3D is CineForm's active meta-data codec. Combine 12-bit 444 wavelet compression with realtime precision 3D control, keyframing, grading, multiple parallax databases for different projection/screen sizes and you have a formidable workflow. Add a Kona 3 and you have full res playout for dual projection/dual HDSDI monitors too.

I've been using Neo3D for Apple/Adobe workflows since day one (NAB 09) and I'm lucky enough to be CineForm's demo artist at NAB as well and I've experienced at firsthand the evolution of this software to the comprehensive toolset it is today. We use R1s for 3D and the recently updated conform for RED export works very well indeed. You have access to all the lovely metadata from your RED cameras too.

The easiest way to justify it is to work out what a Pablo, Mistica or Linux Resolve would cost you to either buy or hire time on. You quickly get to some very steep figures. Of course I'm not suggesting for one moment you won't want to finish on one of these amazing systems but Neo3D gives you the ability to understand stereo-post for youself, to tweak in the field or back at the edit, on your time and within your post-comfort zone. Existing owners of the REDCINE-X compatible Tangent WAVE panel will find they have a precision control surface that's Neo3D compatible already.

I'm happy to support any RED users who opt for the 14-day trial - just message me with your details.
