  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dell UltraSharp 32″ HDR PremierColor Monitor

Definitely curious what Phil has to say about this display.

I assume this would work with the 2013 ‘trashcan’ Mac Pro?

I'm putting it through it's paces. I am indeed Dolby Certified over here, but the bigger stuff going on is some of the upcoming Dolby Vision related stuff regarding workflows and certification for entry level grading setups even.

The premiere and premium display tech is certainly the golden standard, but it's not exactly 3 years ago and the needle is constantly moving in this rapidly emerging HDR world.

Standby. I'm working on it with the big D for a while now.

Thanks Phil for the update! I'm really interested in the Dolby Vision Workflows you mentioned above.

I don't think this is a legit test if they didn't use a 3rd-party probe and calibration software like Light Illusion or Calman. That will really tell you what the display can do with Rec709 and HDR. I'm not impressed with what I see.

There are critics and technicians who are doing this now, and I look forward to their results. I'm skeptical that you can make a mastering-grade display for less than $30,000-$40,000, but miracles do happen sometimes.

Marc,

Yeah, as Jake Blackstone said, it will be great for use in making high quality HDR Youtube videos but not so much for Dolby Vision Hollywood features. But I personally, if I could afford it, would only use it for Dolby Vision hifg quality HDR youtube videos.

Jake,

I just took that phrase as him using shorthand for Flanders Scientific, but maybe he did just mean Scientific who knows. But I think , for right know, you still will have to have a Flanders or Sony pro Monitor to hang with the Big Boys of Hollywood.

I think it's a very bad idea to try to judge HDR on cheap displays. This (unfortunately) is a "you get what you pay for" issue.

I think HDR on YouTube is dodgy as it is. It's no problem on Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV, Hulu, HBOMax, CBS All-Access, and the other various services.

I couldn't stop laughing when he started talking about "investing in very expensive scientific monitor"
That is funny.

Yeah, I`ve seen some good examples of Dolby Vision on YouTube and some very bad examples, especially for the iPhone 12 which ranges from bad to very bad.
