Hey guys! I'll be moving to LA next Jan and amongst other things I'll be looking to rent my Red Raven Kit (plus Ronin, etc...) and wanted to ask you guys for help to get an idea of some rates for it.

My Kit includes:
- Red Raven Brain (Obviously)
- 3 XL Batteries (With the XL Bat Expander)
- 3 120GB MiniMags
- Outrigger Handle
- Top Handle
- Redtouch 4.7" LCD
- Lemo adapters and cable to use with Gimbal

Additionally I have the first Ronin with the power distributor to power the camera. I'm also planing on getting the V-Lock Module with a couple of V-lock Bats, the new SideHandle and the PL Adapter. What kind of daily rate does this kit havein a place like LA?

have you heard of sharegrid? they have a bunch of ravens listed on there. You should be able to get an idea of the prices although sharegrid is a bit cheaper than rental houses its very competitive for smaller rentals like yourself.

I see packages on there from $230-$450 a day.. however Ive seen scarlet-w packages going for 350-450 and epic dragons going for 300-500 too.

That sounds high - do any rental houses use that formula?

A good way to start is 10% of the overall price. So maybe add everything together on your package and use 10% of it as a daily rate? That's what I would do.

That is high, I use 2-3% depending on what it is.. it its highly specialized and has a limited life time, they mayyyybe 5%

10% jeez.. that is really high

2-5% is a good #... but you gotta stay competitive with the market.. while the raven may not be flooding the market (YET), RED cameras sure are, so you gotta compete really no matter what.

Wow, 10% or even 5% is awfully steep. In Vancouver we generally rent stuff at a daily rate of ~2%. We tend to avoid the more expensive rental houses though.

Just want to gather some opinions you all have about sharegrid? Any experiences you care to share? Also why you think it's worth it or not worth it to rent out your Raven? Thank you for any help!

As an owner-operator, Sharegrid has been a blessing. Frequently for a shoot, I have to rent a piece or two of AKS that I don't happen to own. Instead of going through a rental house and having to deal with all the hassle for just a lens or a longer wireless TX/RX, I can almost always find it on sharegrid from someone who lives within 30 minutes or so of me. Plus, you get to meet other film makers that live in LA! Great way to network!

However, if you are gearing up an entire show, then it'll probably be more convenient to go through a rental house, despite the added costs and paperwork. Sharegrid, on the other hand, excels when you need a small amount of gear, or when you need to get gear super last minute.

And as far as renting out your own equipment, if this is your first, or currently your only, camera package, then I don't think it's worth it. You can make so much more money by shooting the project that your camera gets rented on, rather than just renting out the camera. Plus, you get to spend more time shooting :)

Now as far as sharegrid goes, I don't think it's any worse than any of your other options, but I would reserve judgement until we all see how that recent camera theft gets resolved (there's a thread on reduser about it, you should check it out.)

Thank you Marcus, excellent response and just what I was looking for.

No worries! Glad to help!
