Hey guys, doing a shoot with some Cinemagraph pieces in it. The talent's mouth will keep moving but the rest of the image will freeze.

My issue is that we need the image to be sharp enough to pull a still from, but we don't want to increase the shutter speed as it will be noticeable on the movement of their mouth.

Can we shoot at 48fps and convert the motion back to 24fps by dropping frames without having any issues? Will it look normal? Does anyone have any examples of this or any 48fps r3d files I can download?

Sounds like a job for HDRx. Start at 24 fps with a 1/48 s shutter, shoot +1 and you'll get a 1/96 s track and a 1/48 s track. Shoot +2 and you'll get a 1/192 s track and a 1/48 s track, and so on.

If you're shooting Scarlet you'll have to drop to 3K. If you're shooting RED One, you're out of luck...

The only issue with HDRX is that it's going to give you two different exposures. I personally would shoot at a highers shutter speed (frame rate is irrelivent if all you wan is 24fps, shoot 24fps and adjust the shutter angle) If you shoot at a higher shutter speed I would then reintroduce the motion blur in post using a plugin like RE Vision Motion Blur Pro. This will give you the clean track to pull stills from and the natural looking motion blur for your motion shots.
