So i get errors everytime i try and transcode a clip directly from the hard drive all the footage is on..
finally realized that was the problem and was able to transcode successfully after bringing a couple test clips onto my computer desktop...

They work off of a separate hard drive as well, yet the initial drive is not corrupted or anything as the files will play just not transcode in redrushes.

Why might this be?

and do i need to bring all of the footage to my desktop? (will have to do it in waves) or what if i put it all on this second drive... will it work then or be a waste of time?

If i move just the R3D file to a different location, will that come back to bite me in the ass later on?

what should i do??????????????

First make sure all the R3D's exist on more than one physical drive, you should have one and the producers should have one

Next, get a separate drive to transcode to - G-Raids are good for this, they transcode faster and have more bandwidth for editing, the editor will be using this drive to edit with as well

Your transcodes might be failing from the drive they're on because of illegal characters in the file path, if you named any folders with characters like @#$% it will fail

If the camera was either build 30 or the M-X chip, you need to transcode with RedCine-X

Hopefully you are transcoding on either a 4-core or 8-core Mac, not a laptop, otherwise it will take forever and possibly kill your laptop
