Big Problem with Overheating

I've been having a pretty big problem with overheating recently with my RED Scarlet MX.

I bought the camera a few months ago from the original owner, and he told me that the camera gets pretty hot, but just to run the fan manually at 100% when not recording to fix the issue. Also, the fan 2.0 upgrade came installed when he sold it to me. This worked fine and I was able to do a few shoots during the winter, which is when I bought it, although it still did get surprisingly hot considering how cold some of the shoots were.

Now that it's summer, however, I tried doing a shoot outside in 80+ degree weather and direct sunlight, and it didn't go for long at all before shutting off from overheating. Adaptive Preview Quiet Record was the fan setting, and the target temp was set to 55 degrees.

I read somewhere that it could be caused from dust accumulating on the inside of the brain, and I'd believe this since the camera has a lot of wear and has been used a lot since he bought it new. The only other issues with the camera are that the microphone inputs and internal audio don't work.

How would I go about fixing this issue, and would I be able to open the brain myself to blow off any dust to try to fix it? I doubt there are any camera repair shops near where I live that would be able to repair an old RED.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks! :)

Hello, you don’t need to open the brain. Only some screws of the front fan. I cleaned some rental cameras that never where serviced.
I propose you tu use adaptive mode and even replace your top fan with the Fanplate for better cooling and noise reduction.

Adaptive Preview/quiet record can overheat the camera. I recommend using Adaptive (regular one) if you don’t record audio, or Auto with manual fan setting for the record - in case you record audio. Also, if you do long takes (longer than 2 minutes) I recommend staying on adaptive all the time.

I keep my new Scarlet MX on adaptive all the time. Works best for me. I agree with everything Alex said above, thats your best solution.

Any leads to the fan 2.0 upgrade for the Scarlet MX?
My baby is overheating way too many times of late.
I got the pop-up warning to replace the fan.

I'll you sorted by Monday it's a pretty crazy month and I need to get everything package and inventoried.

Installed the fan kit and now my Scarlet is hitting up to 87 before it shuts down.
I had an older firmware (5.2.29) so decided to upgrade to see if the fan is not being recognized.
I hit the endless loop of having to black shade before moving forward.
I couldn't get past Calibration Pass 1 without redlining 87 then shutting down.
I finally got in the system again and did a Hard Restore but that didn't accept the fan.
I'm still getting the Fan pop-up (New fan available...).
In between each attempt, I placed the Scarlet on the porch since it was -24 Celcius outside just to cool it off.
I get a starting point of 56 then watch it ramp up to 87.

I have to call this one into Joshua.
Crossing fingers he can help.

The FanPlate is IMHO the best solution for DSMC1 bodies. Even if I'm the creator of the Fanplate i think I'm not biaised.

Guys, it shouldn't be like that. I have both a Red Scarlet MX and a Red Epic-M (MX sensor one). My Scarlet had no issues with overheating at all (it has the fan 2.0 upgrade), while the Epic M is a little bit cumbersome. The M-version doesn't work with "adaptive preview quite record" setting at all - it wouldn't bump up the fans after stopping the record. The M version only works with two modes - auto and manual, while in adaptive it maxes out the fan rpm speed at 75% and in hot environments it will overheat over time. Usually I set to adaptive on warmup, and then set to auto for a whole working day on the Epic-M.

It's pretty easy to determine which fan set the camera has - on the upgraded ones the front fan has a 4-pin connector. On the non-upgraded ones the front fan has 3-pin connector. The 3-pin have limitations on fan modes and has to be actively managed.

Also, even on 3-pin it's pretty weird for the cam to overheat in minus celsius degree conditions - I can barely heat my cam to 35 degree sensor temp while on a -5 celsius street and have to set the adaptive setting to 60-65 deg. boards temp.

I suppose that the thermopaste was removed or changed or has lost its abilities. All in all the camera that overheats in minus celsius conditions - is a cake, and I would def. return it to seller - I bet he knows what's wrong with it.

Hey Alex, thanks for posting this again. I was fairly sure my Epic M was fully upgraded but didn't check the fan pins at the time. I just did and it does have the 4 pin connector.
Happy about that, this cam is in great condition and only 160 hrs on it.

I forgot to post my findings with my Scarlet issues.
The camera is back to normal temps now.
I got the Front fan working and just waiting on the Top fan to deliver.

Joshua has been amazing at getting this all to work for me :)

Hello there,

recently purchased a Scarlet MX, works alright for now but would also like to ask if anyone would have any leads on where to get replacement fans if at all possible.
Thank you kindly.
