Hey guys, I will be shipping out to shoot in January and have just received my 512 Red Mag, I am really happy with the purchase so far and look forward to pushing it. I will be shooting in South America and I won't be mobile every day, but for some of the shoot will be on the road for weeks at a time, so I am afraid of committing to a product that will break from me just lifting it.

My budget is from 4 - 6 Thousand, and was thinking of splitting the raid into two as to make half of the array a back up, I am using a Retina Macbook Pro that has all the extra ram and anything I could add. I have looked at a variety of solutions including.

8 - 12 TB G - Technology
I would need two of these arrays as I assume I will amass lot's of footage after 2 months. I would really like to hear some experiences using this solution.

PROMISE pegasus R6 12 TB
That looked like a wonderful solutions, but the latest reviews on the Mac site have been slaughtering it for shipping with faulty drives.

LTO storage
I have been trying to read up on this the last few days, I understand that the biggest tapes I see are up to 3TB, but I am under the impression that they crash much less, so I would be having a higher chance on not losing my footage.

I would be happy to provide any information I have missed, but would really appreciate some advice from you red guys!

The LTO is safe and somewhat secure but a slow process.
Its really for enterprise use where you leave it cook overnight.
But if its just for back-up and never have to retrieve you are better off with it.
Mobile use and mechanical drives are scary.
Someday SSDs will be a plenty but till then we are all stuck with drives that can be jarred to break :(

Forget about LTO. LTO is kinda OK for backup at a post facility - portable solution to lugg around with you on a go is something I do not recommend. HDD's are Your friend. Get one Thunderbolt RAID as Your primary and then just a "dock" and bunch of 2TB bare HDDs. Offload to and work from the RAID and back everything up onto the bare drives. Not sure how extensive your shooting will be, but in 2-months on a project You should have about 5-6 TB of RAW data (if You shoot a lot). So a 8TB RAID with 4x 2TB bare drives should do the trick...

Aside from the options You have mentioned do have a look at MAXX DIGITAL - Give Ron Amborn a shout (he is a member and a sponsor here) - www.maxxdigital.com

As per the dock - this is best one out there (Seagate has both Thunderbolt and USB3 - both will exceed the speed of a individual HDD - so I would go with the USB3):

I carried a 16TB, 8 Drive RAID Tower around Rwanda for a month once. Not as fun as you would think. :-{

I would go with a small rack mount option if possible.

Small case like this: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/produ...&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CJi3nLCjlrQCFSXZQgod1CwAzQ

Then two RAIDS inside it. Sonnet makes nice rack mount RAIDS that are extra movement sensitive. Great for when you are out an about on a location. : http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fusion400qr5.html

Those RAIDS are eSATA and 800 so you could use Sonnet's express card to thunderbolt adapter and get some pretty good speed.

Thank's guys!!

I will be looking into these solutions. I am currently in Copenhagen doing a steadicam course, hopefully everything will shape up by January.
