What's the best video asset management / catalog software you've found so far?

I'm aiming to implement something that will allow me to access and edit metadata tags, scrub through .R3D (and other) clips, keep track of where assets exist, and search for clips / subjects even if they are on a drive that is not currently connected to the computer.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I am currently looking into implementing a video asset management.

I was suggested and looking into CatDV suite, tho, it's a really expensive solution so was wondering if anyone has an alternative or any suggestion!

Thank you!

DAMs are a poorly served sector. Seems the few choices are top end propriety or a cheap, limited cataloguer. Assimilate's Scratch Web seems like a current solution with key features being video queing, metadata support and format agnostic.

Sadly The Foundry's Storm was a promising solution (RIP). Finalcut Pro Server wasnt too bad either. Both fitted the affordability criteria

Probably not exactly what youre after but it certianly goes into that direction, made by our own forum genius Mikael:

Great app, love it for cataloguing footage on set and delivering reports to producers but it doesn't fit the OP needs.

CatDV has a nucleus and then you build around it and depending on your needs that can get expensive. I own the basic program but have never taken full advantage of it.

Axle looks interesting. I need to explore this more in depth.

I'm currently looking for a solution myself, something that allows me to grab proxies at any moment and get all of my data organized and accessible in an easy way. I have a hybrid approach now and it's not super efficient.

So hoping this thread picks up some traction. I know a lot of post houses have custom designed systems or they customize some off the shelf systems to work better for their needs. But perhaps there is something out there that works well for a boutique shop and doesn't break the bank.

Does CATDV handle R3D files appropriately? Can't seem to find it listed with them.
Thx

Yes, but only their top-end version “Pegasus” does.
They’re about to release v12
