  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Definitely aware that capture is limited to 720P.

Specific and very immediate application in mind where this may make some sense.

Along those lines, would a RED with KI PRO compare favorably to the ALEXA in terms of image and work flow?

Own Red 39 and getting an Epic in Stage 2, so this isn't an ALEXA vs RED thread.

I'll second this question and drop in the additional question of using a Cinedeck. I like the form of the Cinedeck and multiple recording formats (prores!) But i would like to know the results of the KI Pro as well. FWIW I have recorded to a couple of different DVCProHD decks in the past thru HDSDI and that has worked fairly well but tape?....Mehh! Client used recorded footage for a broadcast directly after shoot and thought it looked just fine. Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to side by side the taped footage to a full transcode of R3D.

Live OP from the RED is limited to 720P.

Playback OP can be set to 1080.

You can record 720 on the fly (along with REDCODE)

Then playback the clips to the KiPro as 1080P (but you's have to reset the Kipro to do that)

The 720 P from RED is 8-bit and does display some banding.

RED OP is not even close to ALEXA KiPro quality because it is a monitoring signal on the RED and it is a full raster 1080P from the ALEXA. I have tested and seen both.

David -- say the destination wasn't broadcast television or film, but Web only.

FWIW I would only use the RedOne SDI monitor tap to record media for offline. The KiPro is a capable unit and I have heard good things about CineDeck so that's fine. The issue is that to avoid latency issues, the in camera decode trades precision for speed so its intended for monitoring only. "Good Enough" for the web, perhaps, but "good Enough" is an expletive around here ;-)

very doable. Also Blair words are sage advice. SDI is the path.

Not built for this purpose but doable. I suggest a test.
