Hi all-

I've been tasked with shooting some interviews in a fairly remote spot (i.e., not a lot of grip gear available locally). Below is a reference photo for what they're hoping to achieve. Any thoughts on how this might
be done? In an ideal scenario where any lights and grip are available, what would the setup be like for something like this?

Thanks in advance..

Daniel

It looks to me like one light, a ring light against black. I cant think of anything easier.

do you have a higher resolution version ? look at the catch lights in the eyes.
its hard to tell, it could be a ring light but the catch lights look broken up, it seems like there are two strip lights left and right of the face and one from the top ?
but yes very close to what a ring light would do.

Gotcha, thanks guys. Dominic, sorry, I don't have a higher-res version. That's the same one they sent me. As far as the background, duvetyn? And some negative
fill on both sides? If we shot this outdoors, would we want a solid slightly over the top too? Sorry for the simple questions.

I have a feeling it isn't a ring light but instead 4 kinos like Peter Hurley used to do for headshots but against black

Yeah looking closer and his eye reflection reveals more like 3 lights. 2 tall side lights and one top centre.

So I have to ask... Why are you going for this look outdoors? There is nothing about being outdoors that's going to help you here. Instead, it's going to require rather a lot of grip gear to keep the outdoors out of frame. (Not to mention the likely sound challenges of shooting interviews outdoors.)

Given what you've said about minimal gear being available, I wonder if a re-think is in order.

Like others already suggested, this is a studio setup with a striplite left and right (both a little lower than the lens) and a frontal medium sized light from above (not too much softened), one light or board from top behind. Plus additional bounce board from underneath. Creating a similar look outdoors might not be too complicated, but you´ll have to rig a "black Cage" with just the camera side open, facing towards the shadow side of the natural light on a bright day. (might be a bit blueish when shooting color). This setup can be magical, try to find some bts from Peter Lindbergh to get an idea.

Cheers
Ulf
