Thank you to Stuart at Focus Optics for the great lenses,
Element Technica for the use of thier facility and STAN station and Tonaci Digital for the use of his EPIC cameras for this test.

Can't wait to start shooting on them.

Next article/test I'm working on is the prototype larger mirror box/ruby test and also a underwater ruby test....

enjoy,

Thanks, Pedro.
Can you post 1:1 (5k) chart shots for reference?
I look forward to the underwater tests.

Hey Pedro - awesome review of a beautiful lens - and really good explanation to us normal folks of the STAN in action :)

BTW I wonder how much of the benefits of the Ruby would carry over to two normal Nikon 14-24s once we get Nikon or Canon mounts for Epic? I mean, if you're using electronic motors then some of the ergonomic advantages of the Ruby conversion are negated. OR is the rehousing partly responsible for the excellent zoom tracking etc?

For here and now of course - the Ruby is the way to go. Also folks would look at you a bit funny if you were swapping in a Nikon mount so you could save a few bucks on glass... while using two Epics, on a frikkin' Element Technica rig :)

BTW when I clicked your link in Reduser it links to:
http://steadi3d.com/2011/07/focus-optics-ruby-14-24mm-test-pt-1-3d-testing-epicatom-rig/
Which is not right.

But this link works - copy and paste this instead:

I can delete this post once you fix the link if you want to clean up the thread?

BTW - nice South African flag in the background :)

The Nikon lens does not have aperture control as the DSLR camera body controls the iris. I have seen a RED One mount that controls the little lever in the mount so you can have iris control......but my guess is that the nikon mount for the epic will just be a mount so in that case you cannot control the iris.

In addition the focus range on the nikon lens is minimal as with most DSLR lenses. pulling focus will suck. Furthermore.......the barrel rotates past infinity so any follow focus you put on there will not hold it marks (even for 2D)

So in sum.....the nikon lens is really realistic only for stills as it is just unusable for cine applications.

The ruby re-gears the focus range and spreads it out considerable to enable proper focus pulling.

.....and yes he does perform considerable work to match a pair IF you order them as a pair.

Which my clients did.

Thanks, Pedro.

I will, looking for a place to host it. I will make the frames plus all the full res frames of the underwater test available to download.

great test Pedro,

glad you showed how tracking performs throughout the range, as this is the unspoken nightmare to a lot of productions. The Optimo's, thanks to having used them 100x, I adjust tracking perfectly using a set 1,5 metric allens, and can then provide production with the ability to zoom during shot, or between shots without me having to adjust or ever touch the rig. But with other zooms (like the Rubys), where tracking isn't as easily adjustable, and not mapping them with 3ality's SIP, all of a sudden you see these tiny disparities. But if all you're adjusting is a pixel or so of vertical, you're in a good place.

How did you avoid vignette in the 14-18mm range?

RED EPIC Nikon mount will be fully electronic and will control lenses just as a Nikon SLR does. Optitek has a "dumb" mount ready for the EPIC as well (pending RED review) that has manual iris control, just as his pro-lock mount for the RED One does.

And yeah, everything else you said pretty much sums up the state of using SLR lenses in a cinema application. OTOH, many people do use these lenses and often with excellent results. Not all applications require a cinema-style setup, nor continuous manual-focus or manual repeatability. The SLR lenses are always an option... I'm anxious to see how well the RED electronic mounts (Canon and Nikon) can repeat focus. The initial video clip posted a month or so back by Jarred of the rack focus with the Canon mount looked rather promising.

Hi Pedro, did you manage to get the underwater frames done? If you need space to host, I can put them on my website.

We are selling a bunch of our Ruby Zooms both singe and 3D match sets in the FS section. We love them but are selling a bunch of glass to make way for the Leica's that we have coming in soon.

You still need a place to host it?

Ruby 14-24 has no trouble cover Dragon? It's 35mm FF? I don't know of any other zooms that will cover Dragon this wide!

Even Primes...

yes it's 35mm full frame.....never put it on a dragon......sorry
