Hi all,

Just want to double confirm, when output for theatrical release for 2K resolution, which is the one that should be used? What is the difference between these 2 resolutions?

Thanks a lot.

Jason

2048x1152 is 16:9

2048x1080 is 16:8.4375

Maybe you're confusing 1920x1080? (which is also 16:9)

I don't think theatrical screens really conform to 16:9 anyway

It's the difference between 16:9 and 1.89:1. Most 2k projectors, at least from Christie, employ a native 1.89:1 or 2048x1080.

DCI resolutions are:

2K
2048 x 858 (2.39 aspect ratio)
1998 x 1080 (1.85 aspect ratio))

4K
4096 x 1716 (2.39 aspect ratio))
3996 x 2160 (1.85 aspect ratio))

Thanks for the information.
So I guess if I output 2048x1152 for 16:9, part of it will be cropped in the cinema right?

But that should not be too noticeable as only a small portion will be cropped am i right?

2048x1152

2048x1152

If you are going to ever have foreign distribution and need to make film prints I would post at 16:9 2048x1152, and only as a last step crop to a DCI size, just keep in mind that the film-HD version will show a bit more on the top and bottom.

Thanks for the input!
