  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

16mm glass at 3K?

Hi Jonathan: Focal length has nothing to do with sensor coverage. It has to do with the particular lens and the format it was designed to cover. Generally speaking when it comes to the Epic and you want to cover the entire 5k sensor you want to look at a lens that was designed to at least cover the full frame or "super" 35mm cinema film format. The attraction in the Epic community is to employ lenses that are designed to cover the 35mm still format...hence the fixation on Nikon, Canon most recently Leica still lenses. Because most of these SLR lenses had to employ a flip up mirror behind the lens in order to effect viewfinding, they employ extra optics to extend the focal plane beyond its natural position. This is an optical compromise and results in larger heavier lenses. In contrast the Leica M lenses designed for non refelx viewfinder cameras do not need to do this and obtain equal or superior results in a package generally that is one quarter the size. Check out the Leica M mount for the Epic on www.spacecam.com click on "store" to see the mount. It might be of interest.

Ron: You're missing the boat here....

Jonathan, see image below...I grabbed it from Scarlet Announcement Feedback thread....There's also an official red chart somewhere in that thread as well....

It's going to depend on the lens. Most of the S16 zooms won't cover 3K. I'd be willing to bet that a number of S16 primes, like Zeiss Superspeeds, would probably cover the 3K handily. You'll have to test on a lens by lens basis.

Looking at that list, I would bet there are a few 4/3 lenses that would cover the 3840x2160 mode. The GH2 sensor in 16:9 is 19 mm x 10.7mm. I've never seen a 4/3 adapter for eos or pl, but it would be interesting to test lenses like the Voightlander 25mm f.95 and see how much of the sensor it covers.

D'oh, makes sense why we don't see adapters then. I guess it would need to be a mount directly on the scarlet then. The market for such an adapter would probably be very small as well.

4/3ds has a much shorter distance from back of lens to film/sensor plane, (flange focal distance) therefore it will not be possible to build an adapter from PL or EOS to 4/3ds.

Damn. Red Team, any chance of a "dumb" mount for this? That would be a godsend and open up lots of shooting possibilities for Scarlet users...

There are all sorts of dumb mount adapters for every other camera out there. If scarlet is as popular as I assume it will be, ebay will be full of dumb mount adapters within months.

I have an Angenieux 7-81 S16 Zoom and it gets a little more coverage than 2K, but not much. The three images are taken at 7mm (effectively 14mm in terms of FOV). The first is cropped to 3K The middle is cropped to 2048x1152. And the last is cropped to 2304x1296.

If I zoom all the way in to 81mm, I can get almost full coverage at 3K, but it still vignettes. It looks about like the Vignetting on the last one, which is cropped to 2304x1296 from 3K.

Each lens will be different, but 2304x1296 was the most I could get out of this lens at 7mm. Obviously with a longer focal length that would increase, but not full coverage of 3K.
