Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I am working on a big 3D shoot and we have Epic M's on our "lightweight" rig (Yes, 86 pounds is lightweight in 3D). Everything worked perfectly in camera prep, and worked pretty-well during the first few shoot days. We had 4 shots out of 70 with sync issues that we wrote off to 'start-up pains'...
Shooting a fashion model on a rooftop, full sun behind her. No lighting, not a silhouette :
This is how my iPhone saw it.
I don't think any current digital system could hold that sky in frame along with the foreground without tons of lighting or grads.
Do the Red One SSDs use a standard Micro SATA connector?
I know they will have proprietary firmware to ensure compatibility, but I am hoping they will be readable by standard Micro SATA connections. I would really like to have my d/l machine ready before people start using these, but prefer an...
Has anyone been able to make the new SmallHD DP6 monitor display Red menus when using HDMI?
I know the monitor just came out last week so perhaps no one else has tried, but if you have it working please let me know.
Here is what I have tried:
Tested with a Red One MX (Build 30.5.0) plugged...

The Blu-ray Disc Association today announced the finalization and release of the “Blu-ray 3D™” specification.
The good news is that it will be backwards compatible with 2D players, and that the PS3 will support Blu-ray 3D.
I have long suspected that the current marketing drive for...
Say you were working on a documentary, shooting on Red (obviously), and needed to send an inexpensive B-camera along with some scientists on an expedition where adding a real cameraman is completely out of the question. What would you send with them??? If the fixed lens Scarlets were out the...
Brendan Gregg, a researcher at Sun has proven quite conclusively that his hard drives experience more latency (slow down) if he yells at them. Check out his blog entry and be sure to watch the video clip.
I will try to translate some of the nerd-speak: Gregg talks about "J-BODs" which is a...
If you want to see some sweet Red One 120FPS slow motion, tune in to the Grey Cup coverage on TSN today - Sunday Nov 23. (The Grey Cup is like Canada's Superbowl).
The filmic looking slow mo you see in the features on Montreal and in some promos was shot by yours truly. The Calgary/BC game was...
So I somehow managed to trash 3 hard drives this week.
Drive 1 was a brand new quad-interface Lacie 1TB. It was 1am at the end of an 18 hour day and I had just spent 90 minutes coping the day's footage to it. I was reaching for the phone to order a wake up call and knocked the drive from its...
On September 9th, Jim wrote (in the DSMC thread):
"If people are not stunned by the specs and design, I will retire... truly."
So gang ... are we stunned or is there a prime job opening available at Red?
On November 5th at 8:52pm, I posted:"...perhaps SCARLET, EPIC, and the DSMC are all one project, with disparate modular parts and price points that you can add on according to budget."
BINGO! This has been my suspicion for a while now.
Modules would include:
-Lens module - mount of your...
Hi guys,
My basement reno is almost finished and I am ready to start buying toys (Oops, I mean important tools for my work!).
I have designed one room to be a home theatre, complete with a reinforced wall to hang a big TV and in-wall wiring for 7.1 sound, cable, ethernet, satellite, etc. The...
How fast do you think this baby would render 4K?
Cray CX1 Wintel machine, starting at $25K. Available on Amazon!
Check it out:

What formats and codecs will give me the fastest render times in RR? Is Prores faster than h264?
I find rendering 2K 2:1 in Quicktime h264 is taking about 30 minutes for each minute of footage, is that normal? (Macbook Pro 2.4Ghz, 4G ram, FW800 Raid, nothing else running).
If I set in and out points on a clip in Red Alert, and choose for RR to use the clip's in and outs, it does not seem to be doing it. Is this function working?
This is an interesting read.
I wonder what will replace Blu-Ray?!? Perhaps another color of 'Ray'? :-)
"Samsung has said that it sees the Blu-ray format only lasting a further 5 years before it is replaced by another format or technology. "
The article is here.
I see that build 16 offers 1080 4:2:2 playback.
Is this still a quick and dirty debayer / color space, or could this playback be considered "broadcast quality".
Say I was working with a sports broadcaster using a Red as a 2K slo-mo camera. Could I play back clips from the camera for broadcast...
We are shooting around the world with Reds using build 15 (2.2.5) and are experience a weird problem where the HDSDI output to the director's monitor is completely clean - it shows the whole image including the look-around area, but no framelines or timecode.
I'm sure you are all jealous that...
