Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
Only America could give us Apple. Only France could give us Chanel. Only Japan could give us Sony. And only Italy could give us... Ferrari.

Ferrari needs to make this car again.
Most of the time, we see defocused things like hard lights or tree leaves or urban environments. Have a look at this, though:

A lot of DPs travel with their cameras, especially Red owners, given the size of the cameras. How many of you have seen damage from high altitude flight? What about your other cameras, like your phones, your photo cameras, etc?

Yeah, it's a DSLR. Yeah, it's big. But... Pentax cameras have features which make them worth buying over DSLRs by Sony, Nikon and Canon. The astro tracer feature alone is worth the investment. And many Pentax lenses...
Unpublished press release (i.e. found by poking around red.com with an FTP client). The file is called Red_ARRIvision_press_release.pdf. This is supposed to happen later this year:
There is also a document called ARRIvision_tear_sheet.pdf but I can’t open it. I think it’s password protected...
The Decline of Mall Civilization. I backed it on the first day. And it will certainly reach its goal.

Let me tell you that I so wish that I had documented my environment more in the '80s and '90s. I got...
Phase One has two Trichromatic backs. The latest one is the IQ4100 (100Mpx). Its ISO caps out at 12,800. That's only one stop less than the IQ4150 (150Mpx), although noise pattern in shadows will be cleaner. It's worth giving up a stop (and some resolution) for the best colour possible.

One goal I want to reach in the longer term is to start a lens company. One product I want to make is a set of M mount anamorphic lenses. However, this is something that I'd be very happy to see someone else create. I'd rather see it happen soon than wait until I am able to produce them. So, go...
I've seen a lot of commercials in my time. Although I stopped watching TV decades ago, I still see commercials on social media. Many modern commercials look terrible, because the DP and/or the colorist doesn't realise that the natural world already has a look. It doesn't need you to paint one...
A rule of thumb is to avoid extremes. In some cases it actually works for you, such as exposing to the right as much as you technically can - unless of course there are reasons to expose to the left. But when it comes to deep focus vs shallow focus, the former is actually useful whereas the...
I like it, per se, but I wouldn't use it, as I do not have any problems understanding or using conventional exposure controls. Still, it is innovative, and it might inspire some people to rethink other areas of camera design...
I don't own very many BRDs and I only recently got a more modern TV (a 42" Plasma from 2007!). So, back in the day, before DVDs, if you wanted the best possible LaserDiscs you'd want the NTSC ones. Yeah they had the 3:2 pulldown, but they were more authentic to the original frame rate, i.e...

It was born out of necessity - when you only had 160 characters to type an SMS, and they cost 25 cents each, you had to be as efficient with your language as possible. Eventually, as SMS became virtually unlimited, and as smart phones took over, there was no need for it. I think it lasted maybe...
I notice that quite a few video bloggers (vloggers) buy ring lights... and then put them next to the camera. They don't put the lens through it, as the manufacturer intended. Of course, you can use a ring light as a normal light if you wish. There is no law against it. I have done so myself...
