Currently the best deal I can think for any camera model.

I would buy one if I could. Too bad a couple of longer term projects cancelled.
That is a seriously tempting deal. The biggest issue with cameras like this is that the body price is only part of the investment—you still need suitable lenses, media, batteries, storage, and a workstation capable of handling the footage. Still, if I had long-term projects lined up, I’d be very tempted too. Sorry to hear those projects fell through.

What do I gain from buying this over my two Komodo-X cameras besides more K and higher frame rates, neither of which I need?

I have a set of Leitz Summicron-C cine lenses, so I am wedded to Super35 for the time being.

Hey Stephen,
Cool you bought the Summicron C lenses.
Komodo X is excellent.
As you mentioned the frame rates and higher res are the 2 biggest advantages of the S-35 V Raptor. There are times I wouldn’t mind slower motion for some shots but Komodo X covers over 90% of what I what I need.

For that price though S-35 V Raptor is an excellent deal particularly for anyone upgrading from an older camera or always wanted a RED.

Yeah, the price is great, but I think I'll just stick where I am for now. I almost never shoot off speed in our films.

What I don't like is that this probably means that S35 is dead with RED.

It might be in the sense of continuing to make S-35 dedicated sensors. I think RED might be considering focusing on bigger sensor formats like VV and support smaller formats by windowing down into the sensor.

Alexa 35 is still very popular so I suspect S-35 still has legs. I personally kind of prefer S-35.

Will be interesting if there might be any new announcements regarding products from RED.
It is that time of year.
