Hello! We've been rendering a four minute sequence shot in 4k for three weeks now. Edited in _m.mov in premiere and composited the r3d in AE. Everything was shot in blue screen. There are long scrolls, puppets, motion tracks, blurs, etc. Some comps use four r3d layers just for key out. The images looks great but we're having the most difficult time rendering. We're supposed to render the whole sequence in 2k dpx for film out. The problem is we can't get AE to render the whole sequence. We've met different errors; image buffer, out of memory, insufficient media, multimachine render stops every cut. We were able to render everything using render farm but some dpx were blurred. It turns out that the opengl rendering is a huge mistake. We have a i7 oc'ed to 3.5 hackintoshes with 8 gb RAM gtx 285. Can somebody help us with the right preferences so we can render this our small project?

Unfortunately some of your issues are tracable to the hackintosh, which is very prone to memory leaks. Try rendering a section on another Mac and see is it more succesful

There are some hidden prefs in CS4 that can help with this. Specifically purging every so many frames. Head to an AE forum for help. However, CS5 will most likely fix all these issues with its 64bit support. We did extensive work with RED and MP and RED in general.

I get those sorts of problems on a daily basis on a real Mac Pro with CS4. Even something as simple as rendering out clips without effects crashes every 50th R3D or so.

Don't use OpenGL rendering. Try prerendering the R3Ds to 2K quicktimes. Then render out.

After Effects really struggles at 4K and their R3D support has major bugs. You'll have to pay to upgrade to CS5 to get this fixed.

But you saved all that money on the hackintosh, so you can afford it, right?

Than you all for the responses. We prerendered the layers so we can have a lighter render processing. Right now we have rendered another sequence and it rendered like butter without even pre rendering. Well i guess cs5 would really serve us well. Dloading the trial version now.

Unfortunately the trial is missing lots of codecs due to licensing issues…

But CS5 is much more stable with 4K footage.
