I've been working with a 7D for some time now and purchased a FaderND to control light and depth of field and the results have been fantastic. I was very excited to get my hands on a RED outfitted with a Birger mount to attach Canon lens and proceeded to do a little test outside. With a nice bright sunny day as this video shows the Canon 7D coupled with the 50mm 1.4 lens and the Fader ND would have produced an incredibly lovely image with rich color. My results from the RED were very surprising as the color turned an odd purplish cast. I must add that I have a Hoya UV filter on the lens as well for protection. When I opened up the FaderND a little bit as you will see in the video the color returned to normal.

Can anyone explain the odd color? I was WBed at 5600 for daylight.

Is this IR contamination? When people use ND above 0.9 they usually use in conjunction with a hot mirror.

I'll just quote myself from Vimeo:

Looks like you need an IR filter, Pancro and Schneider and Tiffen make them. Many digital cameras suffer from a similar effect once the effective ND is beyon .9.

The new M-X sensor is supposed to be better, but still from 1.2 ND onwards, you'll need an IR filter.

The positive side is that you can go the other way and get a filter that blocks out everything but IR (Cokin makes an affordable one) and get some really funky imagery.

Oh, and you also have a very sweet daughter :)

Thanks alot everyone for shedding light on the situation. I was very freaked out when I saw footage for the first time. I am not sure what a Hot Mirror is but I will do some research on it. Thanks again for your help everyone.

While I must admit I chuckle every time I see "sock-her mum" changed to "hoochie mama," replacing "Seven Dee" with "Betacam" is going to make posts like the one which started this thread incomprehensible without a "REDuser-to-English" dictionary. Where will it end? Isn't banishing "those" threads to DVXuser enough?

If I could, I'd replace every instance of "Right on, Jim!" "Awesome!" "Game-changing!" "RED rules!" "I just got wood/popped a boner/creamed my jeans" on REDuser with "I approve."

I know, RED: it's your world, and I just live in it. But in a forum where day-in, day-out people from all over the world, with varying degrees of fluency in English discuss complex technical issues using very precise language, it seems to me this will only make clear communication even more difficult (and IMHO comes across more as insecurity than humor).

:emote_couch:

Man I guess I don't get on here enough, because I am very confused as to why my post has changed ever so slightly. Seriously? You have to be kidding they are not doing that? My post really had nothing to do with a "Betacam". Come on, you can't be serious?
